    Greets!

I've spent many hours now trying to locate the exact match for this complete set of 12 volume books. Though I have found the publication, none of the book cover art matches what I have.

Here is the title and publisher exactly as it appears...

The Complete Works of Nathaniel Hawthorne, With Introductory Notes By George Parsons Lathrop and Illustrated With Etchings By Blum, Church, Dielman, Gifford, Shirlaw, and Turner.

London Kegan Paul, Trench and Company 1 Paternoster Square 1883

I'm uploading two pictures of book binding and cover, which appear to be made of leather.

Any ideas from you folks? I surely thank you for taking the time to consider my request for assistance!

Its very possible that the binding was a special request (bespoke) as a presentation piece or gift.

... Thanks for responding! When trying to value the set, would it raise or lower the value if the volumes were made upon "special request"?

Unless you could prove who it was made for, not likely to have much affect I should think. But I could be wrong - let some others pop in and see what they say.

Furnishing books nowadays. Sold by the yard to fill the libraries, studies and offices of the nouveau riche for decorative effect. Abuses include slicing off the spines to glue to a door covering a drinks cabinet or TV screen.

on occ. people ordered specific treatments, i.e. bindings, endpapers - to match other series already in their libraries.

There is also a current trend that involves re-using books as furniture. The library where I worked for many years was planning to do a circulation desk along the lines of this one:

I don't know if they ever did it.
