I never got any information about this bed from my mother. It was passed down to her from my grandmother. I have it now, but can't find any identification of it anywhere. It has " 28 . " stamped on each piece of the frame. Any help is appreciated. image.jpeg

What a lovely bed ! Possibly French, definitely victorian. Just a guess though.

Not like anything we usually see here in the US. Agree with Johnny but could be something other than French. Just don't really have anything similar to compare it to in my experience.

    English Barley Twist.
    Mid to late 1800s
Just my opinion. Brad would know better than me.

Those twists on the headboard make my eyes go bonkers. Each one twists in the opposite direction of the one next to it.:wacky:

    Maybe I'm wrong about English.
I'm finding Colonial Portuguese to be a little more ornate like your bed.

    Love it.
I have an English suite, Bed, Wardrobe, Dressing table and drawers, They have the barley twist too but yours is much more ornate.

    Mine is around 1900.

I was thinking this bed could be a bit older, was checking around online and found this about the spiral-twisted furniture styles:

    https://www.thespruce.com/know-your-furniture-leg-styles-4053726

"This extremely old style of furniture leg resembles a twisted rope. It is thought to have originated in India, and the style traveled westward across Europe in the mid-17th century to Portugal, Holland and then England, where it flourished from around 1660 to about 1703.

These legs are especially characteristic of Restoration and William and Mary furniture, but they enjoyed a comeback 100 years later in late Empire and Federal pieces. It was revived yet again in the mid-19th century and used on many Victorian furniture pieces. Sprial legs are sometimes referenced as spiral-twist or barley-twist (especially in England)."

It's a very beautiful bed and I wonder if you can buy a pre-fab mattress to fit or if the size is also unusual?

Sorry, I'm having trouble trying to reply. The bed actually had a mattress and box springs on it until recently. Full size, I think

I don't think it's British, it's far too diddly squiddly twirly whirly. Yes, we did barley twists, but not as exuberantly OTT as those. Those Portugee ones look much closer.

Thank you, all! I'm finding out more here than I've been able to find out in the past year.

No jumping into bed on this one. Beautiful but dangerous.

Wherever it was made, such a bed has to be Catholic! Looks like the woodwork behind which the cloistered nuns must lurk.
