Hello everyone. We went to a car boot today and a lady told me this was a WW1 bullet. I knew better, but still found it very interesting. I paid £5 for it and that was only because she said all proceeds go to homeless veterans. What can I say... I'm a sucker when it comes to that. Any idea what I bought today?
    Cheers,
    John

Welcome - while we have some members that are (very) well versed in munitions, I'm sorry to say that I am NOT one of them (anything beyond a shotgun shell is beyond me). I assume one of the Boom lovers will be by anon!

It looks a bit odd for a bullet.

First bear in mind if it is real, is it still live ?

    Any markings on it ?

Hi and WELCOME, John!! To me, it looks a bit like a plum bob with the pointed end cut off.....but it's most possible I'm WAAAAY off base!!!! Just my first thought!!:cool:

Edit: Also, when loading your images, the very top one kind of asks "post ALL IMAGES FULL SIZE"......click THAT one once they're loaded small, and then they will all appear LARGE!!! Thanks!!! MUCH EASIER on older eyes!!! Images should be NO LARGER than 1 MB.....480 x 640 is a good general size.

Plumb bobs (as well as bullets) would be solid and not have that dent in the body!!

It does look a bit like a projectile from a cannon shell round, possibly a tracer round.I am wondering now if it could be from a depleted uranium round, I note the driving band usually applied to non-lead projectiles to minimise barrel wear and give the rifling something to work on. What is the exact diameter? In mm. Is it extremely heavy for its size? If it is not do not bother comparing it with any of these pictures.

I imagine British soldiers brought back all manner of stuff from Iraq.

It could be a practise round, we get all manner of stuff turning up on the nearby beaches.
OP is on the East coast, its had stuff fired on it from air, sea and land for decades from all sides.

Could be both aircraft gun/cannon and anti-aircraft cannon.

This is an A-10, mainly used by US Marines.
    That is its Gatling cannon.
They can fly slow and we hated them on the target ranges in Fallon, Nevada as they blew the s**t out of everything.
I say if it's after you...just shoot yourself for it will surely get you.

Thanks afantiques. It's 30mm in diameter. The back end is really puzzling. I'm not sure why it is round. It's solid and looks like it's put together with 4 different pieces.

The tip is a different metal but I don't see how it could screw on.

We need to put the bat signal up for @springfld.arsenal and see if he recognizes it. One of Spring's jobs is messing with old cannon. As for those Warthogs, you gotta love anything that flies low and slow and makes the other guy's day miserable.

Those Warthogs were up and down this east coast in the mid 70`s to the mid 80`s, everyday in the summer months, practise shooting at a range about 20 miles from me, they also fired off at Donna Nook (RAF) in Lincolnshire which is the next county along from Norfolk where Govinn is located.
If it is a cannon shell it could have come from there.
It looks to have been messed with a bit, maybe painted and a bit sawn off.
The brass or copper ring sleeve does suggest it may have come from a rifled barrel.

I did some more research with the comments you all provided and was able to ID it, I believe. It's a M766 30mm ADEN aircraft cannon projectile. Thanks for all your help.
