Featured Found a statue in the attic

  1. Hello all

    First thread here, hi.

Since in german forums nobody could help me ... well here I am :)

As mentioned in the title I found a statue lately. It has a marble stand and is made out of metal. To me it looks a bit like from northafrican / fore asian ancestry.

It weights 1 KG (2.2 pounds) and it's height is 22 cm (8.6 inches). Underneath the patina I can see a golden color shimmering through. There are no glyphs/letters/signs on it.

    Anybody any idea / clue?

    Best wishes from Switzerland!

    Patrick

    PS sorry for my english.

  3. Wow, that was quick :)

Found it in the attic of my father, in Davos, Switzerland. I remember it from my childhood. It stood in the living room (about 50 years ago).
No, magnet does not stick on it and I gently tried to clean it this morning with a toothbrush (any other tools recommended?)

    Thank you so far.

Hi Patrick and WELCOME to ANTIQUERS!!!! Just wanted to welcome you...others will be along eventually with more help!!:):) Looking rather 'kingly', but 'busty' at the same time, but also looks like an "ancient", at least to me!!

    Welcome to the forum, Patrick.
Of course you are!;) She is lovely. My guess is a 19th century copy of an ancient statue, but I could be way off.
You mentioned West Asia (Vorderasien), I get a Sumerian vibe. But again, I could be way off.
Calling @2manybooks and @Veronika Dubcova for their insights.:)

It seems to me the figure is wearing a garment with sleeves. I don't think the Sumerians had sleeves, did they?

  14. When I was first researching, I focused on the headgear. I thought that might be a hint. But I couldn't find something. And: why is there such a thick patina on it? I know my father was a strong smoker, but hey, not that strong :) Was it maybe common in ancient times (still hoping) to paint golden looking metal black? Just a few minutes ago I was brushing it again with a toothbrush very gently and some more golden color appeared ...

Possibly bronze and other than soap and water to wash off dust and grime, I wouldn't do more.

To me looks more like a woman than a man.
Was going to ask the same.

    Welcome to the board.
