Hi! I was wondering about these pewter dishes. I think from the marks, they are made in Schneeberg, Germany. One mark says 1709, is that the year it was made or does it mean something else? There's an inscription on the front that says 1850. What does it all mean, anyone knows?

These images are from Pewter Marks of the World by StarĂ¡. While the SB mark is similar they both have crowns. I read your mark as 1708 rather than 09. I think I may have a book on German pewter that I'll look for if no one else has any info.

The info on the date found on stamps on European pewter is found online.

    "European pewterers
As a general rule, in mainland Europe the marking of pewter was more tightly controlled by the local guilds than in Britain. The style of mark often identifies the town, and indeed often includes the emblem or arms of the town. Dates in such marks have nothing to do with the pewterer. They simply indicate the date of the relevant guild regulations, which in some instances may have been introduced 200 years earlier."

This will be of limited (or no) help I think but I did look at the book Zinn by von Frieder Aichele. There is limited information on marks but has this information. It's all in German which I don't read but Sachsen is the only one that mentions 1708. Of the several plates illustrated none has a beaded edge.

    Google tells me it says:

    Saxony:
Electors order 1614 (renewed in 1674 and 1708)
    Loud tin, Reichs-Proba
Three-mark system: City-Master, Quality stamp CL city, Master stamp (one double)
