I'm curious to see if anyone knows where this came
from. I suspect that what's holding the glass in place is silver because it's tarnished. No marks anywhere.

No markings may mean the 'Made in India' label has been removed. I've seen a lot of similar around lately.

It came from someone who was over a hundred years old when they passed, it's not modern or mass produced or I would've found it already.

Folks don't stop buying things just because they reach a certain age & everything that comes out of their estate is not necessarily as old as they were when they died. Often times they continue to buy stuff up until they can't get out & about anymore. Now a days, of course, they don't even have to leave the house to buy almost anything. Also, if this item was purchased at an estate sale or auction you have to be aware that items are sometimes added to these sales to liquidate items from previous sales.

An auctioneer friend has a saying that I absolutely love & agree with 1000%. It is "just remember Grandma shopped at K-Mart too".

When we get old our eyesight goes bad. Someone gave her a magnifying glass because older people don't like to wear their glasses for some reason.

I suspect it was purchased some time in the last 10 years.
Not silver either. Pot metal of some kind.

    Most likely China import.

I am sorry you did not get the answer you were expecting from the members who responded to your inquiry. I assure you that every one of the respondents to your question is a long time member of this site & most assuredly are not trolls.

I personally do not have an opinion either way about your item as it is definitely not my area of expertise. I do however trust the opinions of those that did respond & did try to help you out.

All that being said, everyone can make mistakes & since we don't have the advantage of holding the item in our hands we have to go by other clues. If you did indeed confirm your suspicions, than congratulations on your find & I wish you luck in selling the item or if it was bought for your own collection than I hope you enjoy it for many years to come.

While I can see why you think this could be a Murano glass magnifier, it may not be all that old. The ones I am seeing all look pretty modern to me, as does yours. There are also some coming from other places, including China. I found none exactly like yours. If you found your exact magnifier, it would be helpful for you to give us the source of your information. We can all learn something here.

I hate to say it, but I'm with the original responses rather than the OP; there's nothing old on that magnifying glass and I really don't think it's Italian. The metal isn't old, its design isn't European in origin, and the glass looks more Chinese than anything else. They're doing a lot better at it these days, but the pot metal holder isn't "right" for Italian glass. The genuine Italian ones I've been able to find had no metal at all. It's still possible of course, but like Brad I'd need something concrete to change my mind.

Whomever sold it called it Murano glass as a marketing tool because it is Murano "style"(kind of)... not because it is actual Murano glass. There are various other examples of this same piece more or less all over being sold brand new for 5 or 10 dollars.. even less. It almost certainly did not come from Murano.

You have to understand that we are skeptics here, seeing thousands of items misrepresented over the years. On-line sellers are notorious for misrepresentation and Murano glass in particular is often misrepresented, with anything even slightly similar being misrepresented as such. The one you posted is identical to yours but it does not provide any proof of being true Murano. So far, the only bona fide Murano glass magnifiers I am finding are all glass, without the metal mounts.

    Is this yours?

Or any of these (Note they are calling them Murano, but that is to deceive. You need to be aware that not everything is what it claims to be on ebay.)
