The closest place to me is $4 for a big pickle jar full.

The bags / jars are like a scratch off. Most places are looking at it pretty well now. GW is usually the stuff that was on the rack for a month or more and has been searched by hundreds of shoppers. Maybe the lottery ticket odds are better.

I'll try these. They are less than a third of GW $.

In that case it might be worth it. I've scored even at the Ill Will when someone got lazy. Your place sounds like it has better odds, or at least a lower buy-in. The rule with the Good Will jars is that if you see a lot of the store's price tags, leave the jar there. If there aren't any tags, give it the once-over. I found one once with two Victorian pocket watches in it. Not precious metal ones for sure, but for $20 it was worth gambling.

I love that yard owl! That necklace is very-well made and stunning, Evelyb. The last jar of stuff I got at a thrift for $20 was very profitable, but when they had another one the next time I went, it was all junk.

So, of course, every find has to have a story. My husband and I visited my uncle to day, and afterwards, I asked him if we could stop at an antique mall on the way home. So I peruse, found only a little $3 brooch for a friend for St. Patty's day, but I was bored and didn't want to go home just yet. I visited a booth of a person who has made some mistakes in the past (second go-round to the booth, just wanting to see if I missed anything.) She had put new earrings out, and I really liked a costume pair (that I didn't buy) for $10.

So I am looking at the earring cards really carefully, and I spy these for $6.99

So I am thinkin' "Hmmm.... looks like 18k gold." I try to rub a tooth on a pearl, but they are all spiked in, but loupeing them, I can see they are real (various imperfections and color variations.)

I take them with two other pairs of earrings up to the counter. The owner is a pip, and he is always there running the register. He knows I know my stuff, and he starts to look at everything making the remark "She makes a lot of mistakes." So I tell him I will put the pearls in my purse (the lady wrapping stuff is clumping it together) and he says "Let me see them." He practically takes them out of my hand, then proceeds to try to rub them on his teeth. I tell him to STOP because I don't want the nacre damaged (I didn't say that to him, I told him that if they were fake he could rub off the coating.) Now he is mad. There is a couple behind me waiting to check out, and the lady found this really cool book published in 1939 with world paintings. I am looking at it with her, and the owner is so flustered, he rings both our orders up together.

Now he has to void everything and redo it, he is really ticked off. But the kicker is, he rings up the couple IN BACK OF ME first. And guess what? The lady asks how much the book is, and he tells her $25, she says "Oh, I don't want it." So she bought an apron.

I can wait for $6.99 pearl earrings, so I am singing along to the radio, and he is trying not to be upset he didn't see these earring first and that I wouldn't let him rub them on his teeth- I had bought them already, but he voided the sale.

So, if you knew one of your dealers always made mistakes, wouldn't YOU be first in line when they brought something in?

Oops, I thought I put the part in about the Swarovski earrings.... same lady's booth, $12.99. And I bought a pair of sterling screwback earrings that may be gutta purcha, maybe not, $5, don't care if they are wood at this point.

WOOOOT! Eighteen karat and pearl earrings for $6.99? WOOT! I'm not seeing a swan mark on the multicolor flower earrings, but at this point like you said. Who cares? I'd love to see the gutta percha wannabes too.

I'm not seeing it, not meaning it isn't there. The stones could easily be Swarovski no matter who made the metal bits.
