I bought this at a garage sale yesterday - It looks like a coin but I think it's a medallion(?) because of the horoscope signs on one side. What is it? When & where is it from? What is the stuff on the opposite side? It makes me think of voo doo or evil charm/medallion! Thanks all for any help.
If you look closely each row column and diagonal each add up to 65. This is a "magic square". I believe the symbols around the edge are alchemy symbols. Symbols for Jupiter, Saturn and Venus as well. This looks like a typical lucky charm type pendant or token. Mass produced...recent.
May have been customized for someone since the lineup of planetary symbols has nothing to do with their location in the solar system. Think that asterisk shape is being used for the sun.
It looks like it's in one of those coin holders that let you turn a coin into a pendant without damaging the coin or spending a lot on a mount. If that is a break at the top, probably cheaper to just replace it.
Thanks, Bronwen, I've never seen this sort of a pendant mount before, but good to know. I like it and would use it for a keychain!
I've had a few of these for assorted astrological signs. They were sold in the bezels to look like they were coins. They were made some time in the 2000s, but don't ask me when.
The knob at the top unscrews. Could be that your piece is slightly larger than a standard coin size & mount split when tightened. It's easy enough to find coin bezels. The difficulty is finding someone selling them individually.
Exhaustive mother lode of keywords, here: Magic coins’ and ‘magic squares’: the discovery of astrological sigils in the Oldenburg Letters And same token discussed at TreasureNet (not much help with coin itself) Cool thing. Maybe use the Coin Talk link above to ask?
