    Hi all,

I'm no antiques expert by any stretch of imagination, so I'd appreciate your help in identifying the piece shown in this photo. Not the best colour reproduction - it's slightly darker blue than this suggests.

The piece is about 6 inches in height. The lid is hollow, can be removed and has holes aligned on its top and bottom surfaces.

It's marked on the base as Royal Doulton, with "Willow" underneath the stamp, and a date mark indicating the year 1910.

What I'd like to know is what this jar would have been used for. Is it (e.g.) a pot-pourri jar, or for floral displays, or what? And notice the stone-wall effect around the base, with ivy climbing up ... is that a standard pattern for a Willow item?

I've been unable to find anything like this in my trawls around the web, so I'd be really grateful for any pointers you can offer. Thanks!

    Hi,
I think it might be a "marriage". i do not think the top goes with the bottom which looks like a sugar bowl.JMHO

That top piece looks like it would go with a flower frog, not candleholder. A flower frog is used for flower arranging.

    Welcome to our forum!! :happy::happy:

I agree that with those handles the bottom looks like a sugar bowl. Wonder if the top was a top of a potpourri?

Royal Doulton had more than 1 "Willow" pattern. Here is a sugar and creamer from one of their Willow patterns. Note the shape of the handles on the sugar are like yours.

Can we see a picture of the mark?

I agree, I don't think the lid goes with the base.

The lid isn't Doulton, either, imo.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

And yet from what little I could see, the flowers on the top look like the flowers near the bottom of the bowl.......................but then maybe because of that, someone tried a 'marriage'......can you post a side picture showing both better????

OK, so here are some further pictures of the piece, its base marks and lid. Hope these help in working out what's going on! To be honest, the pattern on the lid doesn't look like high quality and the greenery / wall pattern around the base of the bowl seems a bit iffy, too. And the blue of the lid is not the same as the blue of the bowl.

As far as I can work out, the D3263 on the base indicates the year 1910.

But anyway, let me know what you think.

Edit: Should have mentioned that the piece is actually between 4 and 5 inches in height, not 6" as I first posted.

I don't know if it is a marriage or not but that type of lid is for a "bough pot".
