I think the gun is 30-40 caliber range , hand whittled stock percusion cap part missing as is ramrod and part of chamber perhaps someone found it ? trigger mechanism works, it is rifled but slow spiraled, not a thing on barrel to indicate type etc

The gun picture is too dark to make out any details apart from the fact that it appears to be a percussion action, possibly a shotgun if double barreled. 5518.jpg

It appears to be missing the breechblock, and if it is single barreled it had a set trigger (a type of double trigger where you have a combination of routine and hair trigger action)

Well you r right I bet thats exactly why it wound up in Grandmas attic , Grandma was born in 1884 and great grandma lived with them so I always just wonder if its an old civil war rifle discarded . The battle of Belmont Mo , Columbus Ky isnt far and soldiers marched through a little town near here all day on their way there before the battle. No way to know for sure I do know that some almost exactly like that were displayed at Columbus -Belmont state park at one time.
