Featured Cholera art: one big puzzle to me....

I know the Arnhem Museum has a collection of works of Ver Huell, but I am not sure if they are on display. There are several books about Ver Huell, but they are all in Dutch (not sure if you speak Dutch) as far I could find.
In the late 19th century there were several books published with his work. I you search you can buy them for not too much money.

I do understand Dutch partially but only spoken due daytime care in a Dutch family in NY. but reading is too much. will look at the lists nonetheless to see if there's a book with enough color pictures.

Today I have sent a mail to the Arnhem Museum with pictures of this drawing. I asked them if they can confirm if this drawing is made by Alexander Ver Huell. I also offered to visit them with the drawing so they can have a look at it.

Today I have received back a mail from the museum. I will try to translate it a the best I can (with my poor English, steenkolenengels in Dutch...).

Bedankt dat u contact met ons opneemt. Als wetenschappelijk medewerker zal ik reageren namens het museum. Ik doe namelijk onderzoek naar de collectie oude kunst (1400-1900) van het museum en naar de geschiedenis van deze collectie. De privécollectie van Alexander Ver Huell heeft een grote rol gespeeld in de ontstaansgeschiedenis van het museum, vandaar dat ik ook op de hoogte ben van zijn eigen grafisch werk.

Thank you for contacting us. As a scientific employee I will react in name of the museum. I am researching our collection old art (1400-1900 AD) and the history of this collection. The private collection of Alexander van Huell did play an important role on the history of our museum. That is why I have knowledge of his own graphical work.

De tekening die u heeft gekocht (zo vanaf de foto gezien, als ik het goed heb, in potlood en pastel) is waarschijnlijk het ontwerp door Ver Huell voor een houtsnede die hij in veelvoud als pamflet verspreid heeft in 1867. Het werk is dus inderdaad gemaakt door Ver Huell. De tekening is daarmee ook zeldzaam (er wordt vaak maar een ontwerp gemaakt) en is ook bijzonder. In deze tekening wordt de ziekte Cholera als grensbewaker van Nederland voorgesteld. In eerste instantie lijkt het een merkwaardige voorstelling van zaken, maar de tekening heeft een politieke achtergrond. Ver Huell was namelijk bang dat na het uiteenvallen van de Duitse Bond door de oorlog tussen Pruisen en Oostenrijk (1866) Otto von Bismark zich met zijn oorlogsdrift zou wenden tot Nederland. De cholera-epidemie die op dat moment door Nederland waarde werd door Ver Huell gezien als verdedigingslinie. De angst van de vijand voor deze ziekte zou een mogelijke invasie kunnen weerhouden.

The drawing yo have bought (seen only from a photograph, is in pencil and pastel, if I am correct) is probably the design by Ver Heull for a woodcut that he spread many times as a pamphlet in 1867. So this work is indeed the work of Ver Huell. The drawing is quite rare (there is only one design most of the time) and is special as well. In this drawing the disease Cholera is pictured as the guardian of the Netherlands. it seems te be an odd representation, but the drawing has a political background. Ver Huell was afraid that after the collapse of the German Confederation (1866), Otto von Bismarck his warmongering would project to the Netherlands. The cholera epidemic, that swept through the country at the time, was seen as a line of defense, by Ver Heull,The fear of the enemy for this disease could stop a possible invasion.

Het is bijzonder prettig dat u ons op de hoogte heeft gebracht van het bestaan van de tekening. Het is een interessant werk dat op een bijzondere manier past bij deze corona-tijd. Door de huidige omstandigheden zijn wij echter niet in de mogelijkheid om met u af te spreken. Als de rust weer is wedergekeerd na de corona-crisis en de verbouwing van het museum zullen wij weer in de mogelijkheid zijn om een afspraak te maken.

We like it a lot that you informed us about the existence of this drawing. It is an interesting work that fits in a special way in our current corona time. Because the circumstances nowadays we don't have the possibility to make an appointment. When everything is normalized again after the corona crisis en the renovation of our museum , we will be able to make an appointment again.
