I was hoping someone can tell me something about this basket. I have had it for a while now and was using it as my change holder, I emptied it out today to cash in my change, anyways, anyone know it's origin ?

    Thank You

Well, I can tell you it's a pine needle basket. Many are attributed to the Seminole Indians, but this does not have the finesse of those. I make those myself as a relaxing hobby from time to time, This looks like it could be hobbiest made. The interesting features of your basket are the tight coil beginning on the bottom and the flat lip on top. There are a couple good basket people here (Komokwa, Toupou} Wait for them to chime in. Looks to have some age to it.

I hadn't really noticed the tiers when I was looking at it earlier. That is interesting too.
Yes, wait for the others to chime in. I'll be interested to see what they say. I could be totally wrong since I know little about baskets!

I must say, even faded I'm not sure that's pine needle .
It's a bundle coil basket with what looks to me as wrapped in a palm fiber, but I can't say where it's from.

    ( What a party pooper...:(.)

Komo. What made me think pine needle was looking at the close up of the top edge where the basket is ended, very pointy like pine needles.

Sorry, but I must agree with Komo, it's a coiled palm fiber basket. It could have been made anywhere in the world where there are more palm trees than pine trees.

Although it has a certain naive charm, it lacks most of the features found on a well-made basket, indicating it was made by an unskilled basket maker.

On a good coiled basket, one looks for a smooth, even coil with the same thickness throughout.

The wrapping stitches covering and joining the coils should be of the same width, and a wrapped-coil basket shouldn't show any of the underlying material that forms the coil itself.

The stitches should be tight, with no space showing between the coils.

The diameter of the basket itself needs to be carefully controlled, so that the resulting form is smooth and even. I doubt if the 3-tier effect was intentional here. It is what happens when those characteristics just mentioned get out of control, and a beginning weaver ends up with a lumpy, strange-shaped basket.

Perfect for holding change, though. It's practical and useful, and it's not going to be hurt by being filled with heavy coins.
