Looks like ivory. Snuff bottle about 2.5 inches tall. Any idea on the who/when/where would be appreciated!

It is bone, the little black dots/lines are the ends of tiny blood vessels. Ivory has cross-hatching Schreger lines.
This one can be described as vintage, but they are still made. Possibly Japan, although I have seen the bone and 'rosewood' combination on Chinese ones as well.

Isn't it the Chinese who carve a type of nut grown in their country?

Do you mean the tagua nut? It is originally from Latin America, looks very nice, but it has a more even ivory colour than real ivory or bone.

Nice, I love the little piglet.
You can stain tagua nut, and I am sure it also absorbs oils from your hand if handled often over a long period of time.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

    I am piglet-blind!
    I only see birdseszes.
This *IS* consistent with my preoccupation, however...

But this bottle is definitely bone, it has all the characteristics of bone. In Asia bone is easier to come by than tagua nut, it is available from any butcher shop;)
