Thank you @Couch Potato Wannabe..... I’m asking this not to doubt you but to learn.......wouldn’t the lip of the lid hold it in place? 27E6B118-DCB9-4472-B498-782FF84F31A9.jpeg B5CAB7E8-A32B-44ED-B5EB-564DF8EA7935.jpeg BEDE60FB-6456-4A34-949E-29E74E540A9E.jpeg 94DCF0BB-F2F7-421D-AAD4-134F3A537B5A.jpeg 6E87FCE8-B76C-46E2-A925-7909F9DA9FFE.jpeg

True enough, but it can have other purposes, such as structurally supporting the shape of the wood, as komokwa mentioned, some wood can warp, or simply a design element.

Looking at how the lid was constructed, it could be made of three pieces put together to create the lid. They may not cracks, as much as joins. The strip of wood underneath could simply be to reinforce the lid and help hold the pieces together.

Thank you @Couch Potato Wannabe yes I would agree with 3 pieces of wood with them having such even spacing.
