I am always loath to use the term "trench art", because so much of what is described that way truly isn't. Still, what about these rings? Are they trench art, or what would you call them?

These all belonged to the same man, a grandfather who served in the US Army during WWI in France (and was severely injured there.) They have been together with a group of other small WWI memorabilia (some of which I'll soon post here) for many, many years.

There seems to be one similar to this on eBay SOLD. I do not know how accurate the description is:

    Thanks, Aqui. I saw that...

The biggest difference I noticed was that the "cuts" accenting the aluminum on the front (to the right of the center emblem) seem to go in different directions.

Being that they are all hand fashioned, I would think that some variations would occur naturally. That being said, it is with some trepidation that I offer some (what I think are) seemingly legitimate examples for you to peruse and see if they can assist you in answering your questions.

Thanks for all the examples, Flipper! Everyone does seem to be calling them "trench art", but I was thinking there might have been some sort of local industries making/selling these to soldiers as souvenirs. (Maybe?)

I'm not planning to sell mine, but I have to say that I really don't understand the pricing on these things. Some seem SO expensive; others way too cheap... I guess they're pretty common, tho, so perhaps it's only certain types that garner the higher sales prices.

Soldiers in WWII made "Sweetheart" jewelry from aluminum airplane parts. My mother had a collection of trench art that were items made from bullet casings. I hadn't heard jewelry described as trench art, but I suppose it could be.I have a ring my uncle made for my aunt. You can see the defects in the metal. There are three tiny glass stones - a red one in the middle with two yellow on the sides.

I found a buckle ring similar to yours at a flea market in Germany.
