Think your casket looks like white onyx. Can’t see any tiny sparkly bits as you often find in marble. Here’s one with malachite border.

OMG! I collect those. I LOVE it! It is valuable. It looks like an antique French Opaline Glass Casket Box. Google that term right now. You will find your answer. I would buy it from you, but I could not afford to pay you what it is worth. If you are giving it away please remember me ;)

I forget to mention I am drooling over the box you have. I LOVE it so much!! How did you come across it?

I also forgot to mention French antique opaline glass boxes came in many different colors and shapes. Some of the metal mountings differed as well. Yours is such a pretty color white!

Does it come with it's original key? If not, that is common not to have them as they usually go missing. Believe it or not I make keys that fit my boxes when they are missing with antique replica barrel key blanks. I retrofit them with my dremel and sand them down and drill the barrel opening hole to fit the lock pin to make them fit my boxes.

Yours was made anywhere between circa 1850's-1900. Most likely 1870-1890. If you want to get a quick sale you can sell it quick in the $150-$225 range. If you can wait a while you could hold onto it and list it for around $495-$800, (the bigger they are and the more elaborate the metalwork on them are, the more valuable they are), but it will take a while to sell at that price. I have sold them before in this higher price range, but it took me at least 6 months to get a sale. Eventually you will get a buyer at the higher end price if you don't need to sell it quickly and it has no chips or cracks on the glass.

@SYNCHRONCITY What makes it opaline glass? Sorry to question you and not that I d o not believe what you are saying. I guess I thought opaline would change colors??? I need to research it Wow I would have never guessed that I really did not think it was onyx but had no clue what direction to look at!! Thank you sooo much!!

You are welcome! Opaline is more of an opaque type of glass and is not color changing like an opal gem. I don't know how they coined the name opaline glass. Later opaline pieces were more translucent and cheaply made, but yours is definitely the older version. Italy even made copies of it in the early to mid 20th century. True opaline glass can only be French. You have a quality French piece there.

A flea market dealer was moving his humungous booth and advertised an 80% off sale His prices were high but I managed to find a few deals in there This was marked $79 and not sure what it said on it but they thought it was glass

I don't know why I liked it so much but I did not hesitate to pay the less than $16 bucks It is in perfect condition other than the light scratching on it and that is mostly contained to the bottom

Thank you so much for helping me discover what I have Everyone here is so nice and helpful

I am shocked! The prices are all over the place The blue and green ones are beautiful!!

You have what I call the eye. Thud! I just fell off of my chair! $16 bucks! Did they have more? If they did, go back and get them!! You got a great find there. You should put it on my thread about great antique scores I just created tonight in the antiques discussion section. This is worthy of it being on that thread. I collect these antique casket boxes and you are so lucky! You got a great score there!! Congratulations!!

The prices are all over the place because there are dealers that look to sell them quick and dealers like me who would rather wait to sell my pieces at a higher price. I list mine for higher because I don't want to part with them. If I get to hold onto a piece like this for a while I don't mind waiting for a sale much later. The bigger they are the more money they go for and some have fancier metal mountings on them that add to the value.

I really need the money, who doesn't?? I was laid off in February and trying to supplement my income by working on eBay a lot more. It has been paying off a little because the more I work it the more I seem to sell.

We have also been picking trash piles and throw outs and have sold daily on facebook marketplace. My husband thought I was nuts when I suggested it but he has learned quickly how right I was. Just last week we got $460 for a dresser that someone threw out! That is how I had the money to buy the things at the sale. He's catching the fever now! lol

Hopefully, I can stay home and continue working eBay only. I have a lot of all over arthritis and really need to work when I feel like I can.

Wish i could take you to lunch or something!!!

Aww! You don't have to take me to lunch. I was so excited when I saw this box because I collect them and it made me so happy to see you found one. You are very nice.

I feel so bad for you. My husband lost both of his jobs and is on furlough right now and my two teenage daughters lost their jobs too because of Covid19. Times are tough and God was smiling down on you when you found that box. Good for you. You deserve some good fortune. I am so sorry to hear about your arthritis issues. I wish you much success and good luck. I can't get over how beautiful that box is. I want to congratulate you again for finding it! (((Hugs))) to you.

The blue ones are stunning. The green ones are the rarest. Let me know if you find more. I enjoy seeing them. Good luck hunting and I bet you will find more soon. When you find one, it always comes in threes. That usually happens to me. You had lady luck shining down on you.

My first thought was opaline as well, but have to confess I'm not an expert in these. @R. Antonis used to post a lot of threads w/opaline.

If opaline, search "opaline casket" or "opanline box" "opaline brass" on Ebay to get a "sold" price point.
