Agate(Carnelian) Signet - not sure if was part of a ring?

    Any ideas on the origin of this signet - picked up at a going out of business sale at an antique shop in Alexandria Virginia, but they didn't know the origin. Depicts a warrior? Greek or Roman perhaps?

    That's a very intuitive guess Bev, and quite possible I think.

    Next question ...what's it made from? I'm guessing some sort of natural material. I've seen some things with a similar look, but bedarned if I can remember what it was. The OP says agate but it almost looks like an asian nut of some sort.

    I'm a bit of a rockhound... and this sure looks like agate to me... you can tell by the banding and the conchoidal fracture in the chip on the side... that being said I always could be wrong and I often am wrong :)

    This is one of those cases were having it in hand would help. That dark material on the outside is what's throwing me. Unless this was excavated of course, then the whole game changes.
