Both were named for the Irish Mail, an actual fast train in Ireland. I'd imagine it started as a joke, but it soon became the standard name for them.

This part should be in the Rant section, but too bad:

I got up two hours early today to go to a so-called estate sale in the next town over. Stood out in the cold until we were allowed in ... and found nothing. They gave me a small bottle of Arpege bath oil. It was supposed to be two estate sales in one, but the second was all large furniture and a nonfunctional sewing machine. Total outlay, zero. Then I spent $20 in Trader Joe's and another $7 in JC Penney (had a coupon). Had to wait for them to get around to opening their doors. No wonder their sales are tanking; we can't get in and spend money if they don't unlock the doors.

MS or no MS I went to the Ill Will as a last stop, and found overpriced costume charms of no age or actual charm. Left everything. There was another moving sale, but I already feel worse than I generally do with a bad storm moving in and gave up. I did better yesterday at the church giveaway by a wide margin.

    (Hey @Mansons2005 - how'd I do?)

For the car lovers out there: my mother (left) at 15 + her Mom, on vacation in Maine in 1941, with their Packard:

I love the spare tire placement, but I do wish I could see the hood ornament clearly!

I was your size in third grade. Haven't grown since sixth grade. I was finally able to put on 20 pounds in the last few years.

In an emergency I once put a 3 speed stick on the floor of my '69 Chevy stepside in less than 45 minutes....behind a K-Mart in Daytona beach.
    ~
To help a woman I worked with I tried to put a 3 speed stick on the floor of her '66 Mercury.....it took a week after work every night.......and it was never right!!!!
I finally got it semi shifting and sent her to a transmission shop to mess with it. :p

I hope I just got really lucky. This curious little critter came home from a deceased estate garage sale. I'd not heard of UK artist Louis Wain until a Google search this morning. Seems these cubist cats were produced in 1914, were not popular in the UK and were sunk by a U-boat en route to the US. It is signed Louis Wain, too. Lots more research to do but ...
