Carved foo Dogs - Blue John?

Hi everyone, sorry I posted this in the glass forum but I think I should have posted here!, I have here a pair of carved Foo dogs, They seem quite crudely carved..But I believe the stone may be Blue John? they measure a shade under 3 inches tall. Has anyone seen anything similar? Im just wondering if these are indeed blue john, potential age, just anything really

 

Hi madstacks, I already replied to your first post about these Foo dogs/lions, but here it is again:
Blue John is in fact fluorite.
The Chinese often carve fluorite into small decorative objects. It is difficult to see if these are real fluorite.

 

Those have really had a tough life, lots of chips, and since fluorite is relatively soft, the chips are evidence that it may indeed be fluorite as opposed to some similar-looking mineral.

Interestingly, the one on the right is eating a marshmallow, an odd activity for such a figurine. Fluorite mining was a big industry not far from where I once lived in Illinois, but it is mined in many different countries.

They are most likely to be no older than about 60 years, that time in my mind very roughly marking the beginning of massive importation of cheap Chinese-made souvenirs to the US.

 

I'd have posted this under Pottery Glass & Porcelain because I think of Tribal Art as primitives or made by indigenous people. Maybe I'm wrong about that?
