Can anyone tell me what I have? I was going through my grandmothers things and I found these. The "Midsummer Nights Dream" is a leather heard back and looks to be in really good condition. The second one is in German and I have no idea what it says. I placed pictures in this post to show you both books. any help would be appreciated!

Der Struwwelpeter (Shockheaded Peter) might be interesting if it's an early edition. It's a relatively well known children's book.

Well, here's a Wiki page about the German publication "Der Struwwelpeter." I was thinking something for children from the illustrations and the few words I recognized, but this confirms it.

Well, it has to be 1876 from the year in the illustrated page, I would think. I doubt it was reprinted, given it's delicate condition.

    Reduce them to 480x640.

I see 1878 at the bottom of the page of text you show (essay on the book's background?). That's 25 years after the original publication, so maybe an anniversary edition. The pages look to be in sorry condition, so maybe not worth a lot.

I guess you can mostly disregard this. The date on that page is 1871.

The book was originally published in 1845.

    jubiläumsblatt der hunderisten aufläge

translates as: jubilee of the hundredth edition

So it is an anniversary edition (just not 25 years - well, give or take).

Late 19th C mass produced books have little sales appeal unless they are in remarkable condition or somehow or other unusual ( signed, fore-edge painted, ex-libris someone famous, etc.)

Strawheaded Peter was a popular German naughty boy figure, huge numbers printed, so quite common. In Germany anyway.

I'd not take a great deal of notice of any abebooks listings, they are notoriously optimistic. I'd feel I had done well if I got the equivalent of $10 apiece for them, conditions where you are may vary.
