I can smell the smell as it were, but it doesn't stop me. Asparagus turns your pee a funny color too, in addition to the smell. Cilantro tastes fine to me; it's just as well since I love Vietnamese food and you can't make a proper banh mi without a pile of it. Raw. :)

I used to think I was alone. I hated Mexican food because it inevitably has cilantro and people would add more! Yuck. Now that I know, I eliminate it and the food is fine.

I recall reading that the "taste" or "distaste" for cilantro is likely genetic - it has something to do with the smell, as well as the taste.

Thankfully, no one in my family dislikes it. I grow lots & lots of it every summer & use it in all sorts of cooking.

p.s. two of the four of us love asparagus - the other two can't stand it!

My mother only used canned asparagus , it was mushy and made me gag when I tried to eat it. Cooked Carrots do that to me too. In my adult life I avoid asparagus. I like raw carrots, still cant get down a cooked one though.

I eat any but rubber frozen carrots. I had some once in hospital (been watching way too much Antiques Road Show) once that I believe actually did bounce when I dropped a piece. No lie. Jarrred or canned asparagus is only usable in Vietnamese crab soup. It's made with pork stock and fish sauce (aka rotted anchovy sauce), crab meat, and tinned asparagus. The Vietnamese refugees found the real deal here in the States and never went back to the tinned. Can't blame them.

The only canned veg I will eat are canned beets - and even then I only use them sliced into salad. We use to grow beets in large quantities and cold store them with greens and dirt still attached so they would last through the winter. Delish.

The only frozen veg I use are tiny peas (for chicken pot pie) and edamame for use in orzo or couscous salad. Everything else is fresh, fresh, fresh and in season!!

We Yankees don't get that option. Veggies are in season for about two months a year. Canned vegetables are foul, by and large, except canned mushrooms. Canned mushrooms are the only ones to put on pizza if you're making your own. I wouldn't want them by themselves, but they were what the local pizza places used when I was a kid and nothing else tastes right.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Sometimes I skip threads when I know that I won't be able to help somebody. But then I miss some that go off on a tangent, like this one.

I will eat asparagus and also cilantro. I don't eat canned vegetables most of the time, although my mother makes a good cooked mushroom in a sort of light creamy sauce like gravy, and she uses canned mushrooms. Tastes good!
