Hollowware often has only a design or inventory number and no "name" per se. The marking includes a number, no? I assume that's what you are asking for when you say "Make?"

i meant the patterns like "Chantily" or "kingGeorge" or "plymouth" etc or were there no patterns in 1917? i am uploading the hallmark.
also how can i tell if this piece is genuine or fake ?
I tested it for silver and its silver .i bought this from an estate sale.

What Bakers was trying to say is that many tea services did not match a place setting pattern. They were stand alone items with no matching service.
I see a lot of motifs in your pattern that would work with many of Gorham's patterns.
Gorham does seem to have made patterns to match may of their patterns
    .
There are 11 pages of Gorham coffee pots. I'm tired and don't really want to go through all of them.

It says Sterling.....& has a proper hallmark.....so it looks to be genuine .

What's that cute little scimitar off to the left...?[IMG]

The scimitar is the Gorham date mark for 1917, Komo.

Thanks for giving that more complete explanation, Cluttered.

I don't have anything to because Baker & Clutter certainly covered it all. I doubt replacements.com com has your teapot pattern listed because the pattern number A6421 is not listed in their index of Gorham patterns. Following is the page of their Gorham index where this pattern number would be. Note it skips from A5887 to A6427. This means replacements hasn't seen A6421 by Gorham yet. As others have said there is a good chance this pattern nerver had a name only a number like so many of Gorhams patterns.

Hold the phone, don't hang up yet. Look at pattern A62421 on replacements.com. Gee, I do believe it is the same. There is no pic of the coffee pot but in comparing your coffee pot to the tea pot pictured they look similar to the scroll work, base, finial, etc. yours has more design above the open medallion, the one on replacements has been monogrammed. I searched replacements using the keywords Gorham A6421 and popped a message did I want A62421. I clicked it and got the following.

I bet replacements messed up on reading the number on the bottom.

so how do I know if my part is the original and not made by replacements.com ?
unless replacements.com knowingly put the hallmarks differently ?

What is replacements.com then ? They don't make replicas of old items ?

As Komo said, replacements.com is not a manufacturer. It is a seller of used silver, china, glass, etc...

    http://www.replacements.com/services.htm

Yours is definitely original made by Gorham in 1917. At the moment replacements only has for sale the teapot, waste bowl, kettle with stand and tureen. Note that replacements says about this pattern. Do note they say by Gorham:

    "Item#: 420077 (replacements inventory number)
    Manufacturer Status: Not Known
Pattern: A62421(Sterling,Holloware) by Gorham [GS A62421]
    Pattern Number: A62421
    Description: Sterling, Holloware, Scrolls&Floral
    http://www.replacements.com/webquote/gs_a62421.htm

They buy silver, china, glass, etc... from estate sales, auctions, individuals, etc.; polish and clean up the pieces; and finally jack up the price to sell on their site. Their prices are always much higher than on such auction sites like eBay. They have scouts tracking down patterns all over the country. It a great website for tracking down and ID patterns. I have sent pictures of items to them several times for identification. Mine you they are usually right a good 90% of the time but have erred in IDs also.

I thought about doing a side by side with the teapot on that site, but as their images are copyrighted and I didn't have permission to use it, I didn't want to take a chance. I thought the detail on the teapot like handle and base looked more like the coffee pot. Also didn't want anyone to think I was copying others pics like someone on the forum did a few days ago and was booted out. :muted:

here is the pic of my complete set, what i noticed that they all have numbers in perfect series starting from A6421 - A6425 , but three pieces have same year hall mark a trumpet 1919 , one has a sword hallmark 1917, and one has bird hallmark 1919 .
does it make sense ? why would Gorham make one set over several years period ?

    Thanks Aquitaine !
so whats the answer to my question ? was Gorham making a set over several years?

With what happened a few days ago by someone using pics from a website and claiming they were hers, I'm a bit leery of posting anything that isn't mine or isn't already on this website. As to their pics being copyright, I believe on a website is considered being published. On the "Terms and Conditions" of replacements.com they say basically that they claim sole ownership of any pic, image or whatever:

"With regard to any pictorial images--of any type or description, including without limitation photographs, drawings and/or digital images--provided to Replacements, Ltd. for identification, the owner grants to Replacements solely a non-exclusive, worldwide, paid-up, royalty-free license to reproduce, prepare derivative works, distribute copies, and/or publicly display the image(s)."

Now I have in the past used images from other sites but usually from nondescript sites and will no doubt do it again in the future.

THey were not making a "set" over several years, they were making teapots in that pattern, coffee pots in that pattern, sugars in that pattern, etc... I don't know how Gorham stored the stuff but I suspect teapots were in one place, coffee pots in another and so forth and so on. Customers would order a teapot, sugar, and creamer; teapot, coffee pot, sugar, and creamer; tp, cp, sugar, creamer, and waste bowl; or whatever. The items would be pulled from the different areas with no real attention paid to year to fill the orders. The year date in these set really have no importance other than mentioning the years a certain pattern was in production.

BTW, this silver service is lovely!

    Thanks Susan
If they were pulling individual items to make a set how the serial numbers line up in perfect order ?
I made a typo earlier , one piece has bird symbol which is 1914 not 1919. I do have three pieces from 1919 n one from 1917 .
