tyeldom3, we always see chandeliers at auctions. Besides Waterford prisms/chandeliers, how does one know which are good for reselling? We have looked at Closed eBay items, but are still unsure.

We are going to one soon and saw this is one online, how much would you pay roughly? Thanks.

Hi happy, that's a great question, and I wish I had a great answer for you. In my opinion, that chandelier is very pretty, but maybe not quite enough "bling", so to speak. Or, maybe it's something really good....I don't know That's just an observation from a complete novice. I only had the experience last year of buying a group of chandelier prisms for $2 or $3 dollars, splitting them into 3 separate auction lots, with low starting bids, and they all turned out ok. I think I ended up making around $90-100. on them. I think a lot of people like to decorate their Christmas tree with them too. I'm sorry I couldn't help....I wish I could. Maybe someone can

 

I was traveling last week but managed to get to a couple thrifts. Not the greatest haul but all for about $10 so oh well. You all have much more interesting finds and I love seeing them!

A Bing & Grondahl figurine, a strange metal doll head and carved soapstone bear cubs.


Two sterling Birmingham nut/bonbon bowls a bit over 100 years old.


And two tourist ware poster paint Indian pots, one marked Jemez Pueblo.

 

I love fixtures with the many crystals, I use to run them thru the dishwasher to clean them, just put them in a large strainer or in the silverware part

 

Sis, those are great finds, especially for $10! I love seeing everyone's finds. That doll head looks interesting. Is it made of brass?

Yes brass with painted features, now dented and chippy. Someone in the thrift said that they'd been looking at it for weeks and wondered what I'd use it for....I'm thinking Halloween is coming and she looks pretty spooky!

It does say 'Erste Aufgabe' (first edition) on the hymnal. That was what I was going by. If there is a contents page post it, I expect my German would be just good enough to work it out.

It does appear that it is a hymnal and not a "Common Service Book with Hymnal." My "Common Service Book with Hymnal" (published 1917) has many/most of the hymns listed in the link for your book.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, you are right, not much bling to this one. Sometimes we see nicer ones going for under a hundred, guess we could guestimate a per prism price and see if it is worth it.
We went to one auction, and I swear, the width to that chandelier was almost 4 feet. DH feared for his poor back and how to get the monster home, so we didn't bid. It went for a song--oh, what we could have done with that one (profit-wise).
Do the strands that have just the crystal balls on them sell also, I wonder...also I wonder how to tell crystal from just glass on these...

 

Sis, yes, perfect for Halloween! I think the dents & chips just add character.
Just got back from the flea market. Spent $61. on all the stuff here. Haven't researched any of it yet. So hoping I can at least get my money back. I bought a few things that I don't usually buy, and have no knowledge of.
A cast iron, signed wall hanging Buddha face, a few pottery & glass pieces, a perfume bottle, a campaign pin, a yixing teapot that has a few condition issues, but I can't pass them up when they're cheap enough, because of Nuff's huge sale on 1 of those. An Art Deco timer, and a jade skull.

 

Your perfume bottle was most likely sold by Irice (an import company out of NY) & would be c.1962. Make sure you play up the cap because there are collectors who seek these specific type bottles.

Happy, I know what you mean about those large chandeliers at the auctions. I see them often too, and always think, how would I ship that thing? They're just way out of my realm, but I do see some really good, low selling prices. I've seen the auctioneer get really mad too, when they go so low.
I'm not sure about the crystal ball ones....do you mean a plain circular ball with no facets? I have a hard time telling crystal from glass, but sometimes with small objects, like the prisms, I can just tell by the weight of them, they are heavier than glass. Others may have better info/advice. Good luck!

If you can get a really good deal on one of the chandeliers you may want to think about selling it off in pieces. A few years back the auction house I attend liquidated the estate of a local "lamp guy". Along with boxes & boxes & boxes of prisms I got many pieces & parts of crystal chandeliers. I had glass arms of different sizes, the center vase like portions, the bobeches & so on. I was shocked at how well some of the pieces did & it would certainly be easier to ship.

 

I went out today and found a way to make more space in my gas tank.(sigh) I did however find these waiting in my "why haven't you sold me yet" pile.
