Painting purchased for 420. How much should I look to sell for?

Hi everyone,

I have recently found my self in the possession of an oil on canvas by Swedish artist Hans Ripa. The tag is still on the back of the painting, tied on by a ribbon. It was originally purchased from a now closed down antiques store for $420. Ho long ago this purchase was made I don't know, but I suspect at least 7 years ago.

If I were to sell this painting, what could be a realistic sale price?

Any help greatly appreciated!

 

Can't comment on the painting,but all the tag means is that someone once asked that much for it.
Best to forget that entirely, and think only about what you paid for it.

Then start searching for other works by the artist as comparables. Maybe there is a gallery somewhere that handles this artist.

Yes. A painting of a naked buffalo piloting a tugboat should be shown as the background local, as well as whether it's noon, sunrise or sunset, is important to value.

This is an artist with a long if not stellar auction record. The most expensive results I found were two just over $500.00. These were for large works and over 10 years ago. The market has changed a lot since then. All recent sales I found were under $100.00

Besides who the artist is, subject matter, size, and medium also matter.

I cant differentiate whether it is oil or acrylic.
