    Wow!

"Gigantic item found by a metal detectorist is among recent finds in England and Wales reported to archaeological authorities."

Does make you wonder how many finds go unreported.

Not many. The detectorist societies are very fussy, and the fact that you get full market compensation means there's no real urge not to report. You couldn't sell that thing.

    Apart from the "Nighthawkers"

Nighthawking is often performed on private land where permission to survey and dig has been refused.
It is a term used by Britain's metal detecting community to describe the theft of archaeological artifacts from protected archaeological sites and areas under the cover of darkness.

I've always loved pics of the ancient treasures found around the U.K. Even though some later discoveries may by richer I measure each one against the Sutton Hoo hoard, or burial. One high point of my first museum-hopping trip to U.K. Was to visit the display of those artifacts in the BM. As I recall it was a ca. 700 AD burial of a High-ranking warrior with his boat and a lot of his prize possession, first excavated in 1930's.

I read once years ago that there is enough buried treasure less than 3 feet below ground and within coastal waters in the British Isles which would pay the national debt off twice over.
It just has to be found.

OK you British cohort, get some metal detectors and get to work! Around here all we'd find are old nails and bottle caps. If that. America just doesn't have the history...or the loot. We on the East Coast do occasionally find something in a bottle dump, but it's generally more historic or cool than valuable.

There's a lot off the Eastern seaboard and the gulf. Literally thousands of ships have sunk, Great Lakes too. Not near as old but still many very old.
Thought I wanted to do that long ago and even though a Pieces......I'm not much for diving at all. :p

Something got found in the Thames yesterday, leading to the closure of Tube stations and roads for a while.

Lots of boooooom! still out there, too.

UXO more like it - unexploded ordinance. Americans don't have nearly as much of that to deal with either, gratefully. No doubt Spring hears about the live shells that crop up from the Civil War every so often.

True, but you're not likely to hit one of those with a plow or a shovel. ...unless the ship breaks up of course and some of it washes up on shore. I'd be tempted to fill her full of portland cement and leave be.

I think that option would increase the explosion by many times.

The exact opposite effect of sandbagging the sucker and shooting it? Drat. Scratch that idea.

    Ha!
Yes, restriction of any ordnance's open and normal reaction will increase the reaction exponentially.
