Anyone Know Something about this Squatty Decanter?

Hi All! I bought this because I think it has an interesting shape. Don't know if the stopper is original, but I think it is. It does not glow yellow under a black light (FWIW). The base of the decanter has a cut panel design, like a classic colonial panel, star cut base and a well applied handle. It measures 6" high to top of stopper and 7" wide.

I'd like to know not only who when it was made but also what it was used for.

    TY!

    Nice!
I don't think a decanter but a cruet. Doesn't seem the correct shape for wine or liquor. BWDIK. I haven't been batting very well lately.

You do realize it is sick and may not clean up. You could try rice, ammonia, and water with a drop of Dawn, letting it sit for a week or so, swishing it each time you walk by. Sometimes that works, but not always.

Oh and I do think the stopper is original. It balances with the shape of the cruet. Is there a number scratch on the bottom of the stopper? If so look for a matching number on the cruet.

I think it's really too large to be a cruet. I thought maybe whiskey bottle??? Did I mention that it weighs a ton? It would be really really difficult to wave over your salad. Pat, I haven't even tried to clean it yet. I was so taken with the shape that I didn't care about the crud on the bottom. The residue looks like it's from water. So I was going to try a little CLR.

Squat decanters are often ship's decanters, not prone to falling over, but with that handle and lip, I will go with the others as some form of dispenser, but not of wine or spirits.

I seem to recall that unlike other decanters for whisky etc. that claret decanters have a pouring spout. So, if it is too large for a cruet it could very well be for claret.

Inky - claret is likely. Thanks.

Don, yes, the Hawkes decanter is very similar. I spent about an hour this afternoon looking at all my saved ABP pages because I think this piece either is ABP or is similar in quality. It's a very elegantly made, nice quality jug. I'll keep searching on it to see if I can find any marks. TY!

Pat, the whiskey jugs you linked to are very similar as well. This one has a shorter neck, I think.

Just a WAG. But you might try looking at one of the Heisey Colonial Patterns. They confuse me, but this looks like one of them.

I thought of Heisey also. But this glass does not glow yellow under black light and all Heisey I've seen does glow. Also, it's not marked . . .

The link I gave you says it is an unmarked piece. I have run into a lot of unmarked Heisey . I'm not sure about the glowing. I haven't tried it on enough to know if it all glows. I don't know if they ever made cruets like your's though.
