Both earrings broke? More likely they were repurposed. But how odd.

Mom repurposed a wonderful brooch, into a necklace...& killed it !
It happens all the time..

 

I'm not so sure these were earrings.

I think this started as a pin.
If I am remembering correctly the trombone clasp was a French invention and used more in European jewelry.

Take into consideration that if they were earrings they were probably clasp or screw back, these seem too big to have been pierced.
I don't see any indication on the back where the earring backs were taken off. There would have to have been some smoothing of the area where they were.

I do think that polishing and taking some close up pictures of the back would be helpful.

 

I cropped and lightened your photographs to see if it would bring up more details.

I think it would help if you posted better photographs. You took these with the light coming from behind. Turn around and have the light to your back so the pearls are lit from the front and that should give you more details and clearer photographs.

 

On the franc thing. That's old francs, not new, France went to new ones in 1960, and the new was worth a hundred old. So not expensive.
