There are 3 chairs without arms and one with and they are very light. Can anyone help with the approx date of them please or any other info? Plus did the company sell direct to outlets in England as I can't figure out how my family came to own them! Thank you!

Teens-20s. Not familiar with the company but found this article. I would take the line about high values with a grain of salt. Even in this, they give examples of some low values.

As to how they ended up in England, your guess is as good as mine. Are you sure it is the American company? I could imagine there being more than one Paine Furniture Co.

There was a Paine Furniture Co. in Boston on Arlington Street. They occupied a very large building on multiple floors and the furniture was considered very good quality but not as high end as a company like Kittinger. The company dated back to the mid 1800's. If those are from the USA, they may been left there by someone who moved to England.

When I lived in Boston, I had a neighbor who worked for a company that specialized in moving households overseas for people who had been transferred or hired by larger companies. The company would pay all the moving expenses and it was very expensive so I can see why someone would leave things behind if they had to pay for the return trip. Some people may have just sold things off while living there.

Hi again, thanks to you both for your replies. The chairs are definitely marked Boston Mass, so they are from the US. We did have family living over in Pike County in the mid 1800s but I don't know whether they ever came home to England - I suppose they could have shipped everything back but I shudder to think how much that would have cost - maybe we were richer back then! Thanks for the catalogue - it is full of unusual and very ornate styles that make my chairs look quite plain! I would love to know how they looked in their original state before my grandma took to them with a pot of white paint!

They were in Milford, Pennsylvania. I think some also moved to Tazewell in Virginia.
