I have this dresser and want to refinish it. The top has veneer on it that is damaged. I'm wondering what is under the veneer if I peel it off? Does anyone have any experience with this? It's Atlas Furniture Company.

Welcome, Pkeith! Perhaps those in the know would like to see this damage in order to give their best opinion.

This is the top front. It's starting to peel. Should I leave it, sand it lightly?

Hang on for those in the know. That doesn't look all that bad to me, but then I have no personal experience with this kind of thing.

    Hi,
Easy fix if you have the time. I would not cause further damage by removing the top.JMHO

Just lightly sand it and stain it?

You could sand and stain to get a better look but it is a pretty easy job to splice in veneer for a small area like this. I would not remove the veneer. What is under there will not be pretty wood and the glue residue will make it worse.

I would not remove the veneer as normally there is a reason for using veneer. Uneven grain, blemishes in wood grain or a cheaper wood used underneath. The damage looks to be minimal and can be repaired. Do you have pics of damaged areas? I have been repairing and refinishing antique furniture and steamer trunks for several years.

When you say refinish, do you mean stain or paint?

I bought a dresser with similar damage.
I tried cutting out the piece and refilling. It never looked right and there was bowing of the veneer in other places.

I just removed all the veneer on the top, filled in areas that needed it, sanded it down, and painted it.
    You could never tell
