Bought a huge box of linens at a local auction. I just wanted to use the fabric and the like for shop towels, etc. When they gave me the box, it seemed heavy for a box of towels. After I got home, I was going through the lot and this wonderful statue was rolled and taped inside a thick towel. I get some of my best loot from this auction because they often don't fully examine the contents of their box lots. What a wonderful bonus!

So whatcha think? Who is she? Old or new?

Can you provide a close up of this? (There's not enough detail in an enlargement.)

The texture there, and that flaw, are making me think it's molded, which would mean either resin or parian.

I don't think it's resin. It is very cold to the touch. That section has a crack line. Looks like the base may have been repaired.

In some of the tourist spots in Italy, they would have these statues made from the "dust" from marble works. They were molded, trimmed and then placed on a machined stand. Thus the "cold" feel. Some of them are very nice. And some tourists think it's carved marble when it's not.

If you run a search for Santini statues you'll see a bunch similar to yours. There were four up for auction here not too long ago and I was surprised by how much they brought.

For the life of me I can not remember whether it was in Fierenze of Sienna, but about a score of years ago "we" purchased a bunch of this type of stuff - all copies of famous works. They are made of compressed marble dust, but they were carved by artisans "in public", so you could see the evolution of the piece. The same house did a lot of work in malachite at the time as well.
