    That's not a bad idea!
In regards to the notebook and the story:)

I think I may just do that!

I also want to put a timeline on the back of the hutch .

    Something like this.

    - train statiOn built 1860 by European and north anerican railroad.

    - train station closed and tore down 1979

    - hutch built December 2016 from train station materials.

There are some nice horizontal boards on the back, perfect spot for the info!

Then a couple coats of clear to seal the info up nicely!

Just been working on it here and there, whenever I have a spare hour or two.

As much as I want to see it in the house. I'm trying to be patient to make sure the job is done properly!

I'm glad you folks have enjoyed the pics and thanks for the great ideas

Are you going to add to the ambiance of it? Maybe a RR clock and other items, signs maybe?
Perhaps have a nice brass plaque made for it too?

    Absolutely!
I have my eyes peeled, and some feelers out with a couple people who seem to be able to find stuff like that.

A clock would be beautiful in the center back panel.

I do have a early 1950's tin train set, in great shape. With colours that would compliment the hutch.

I plan to have the train and cars on one of the shelfs towards the back:)

The plaque would be a nice touch as well.

And there is a local historian that is supposed to have some nice black and white photos of the station from the 1940's

I hope to get ahold of a picture showing the front doors as they stood originally :)

Who knew a project like this would be so much fun.

But it's always the simple sentimental things that make a person happy right:)

Gooday there folks! Not going to be makeing much progress in the next few days, due to that annoying haveing to have a job part of life! Haha

And I'm out of urethane again! I've used a gallon at this point, with 2 or 3 coats on its surfaces.

Minus the back side which will get one coat at the end.

I've been putting it on as thick as I can without haveing a run..

    And so far so good..

The multiple layers of different coloured paints almost look three dimensional in some areas. Once sealed up with a few coats of urethane.

Snapped a few more pics focusing on close ups of the different finishes and how it looks at this point.

Glad people found it interesting and enjoyed the pictures. :)
And thanks for the kind words and enthusiasm!
I can't wait to get it in the house, the pictures don't do it's size justice.
9 foot ceilings are a minimum to be able to stand it up.!

And the location where it is going will have a lot of natural light. Allowing for some finall quality photos

Don't forget that tipping it up increases its size when it's vertically in line fully on the front or back edge bottom.

That's a great piece!! Could you send a photo of the entire thing? Or am I missing it?

Yes! This is very true, and I haven't exactly done the math. But the cabinet is 2 inches short of being 8 feet tall.
And on the main level of the house my ceilings are 9 feet high .

So I should just be able to stand it up.
    I hope!!!

There were a few I had posted earlier, but I don't mind

Even have a couple trinkets on it in this picture, just playing around

My goal is to get the last bit of urethane on it, and moved in the house in the next 4 days

So! Yesterday I put the last coat of urethane on the shelves. As well as the second coat inside the cupboard/cabinets.

Then today I scrubbed the backside of the hutch. Raw wood, never painted and extremely dirty!
Just pinsol warm water and a rag, and they cleaned up nicely.
This evening it got a coat of urethane on the backside. But I left a small section varnish free, where I intend to hand paint on a bit of historical info.
Even if it will be against the back of a wall and unseen. Then it will get a matching layer of urethane to match and seal it.

Tomorrow around 3 I think I may have got a few people onboard with helping me drink a couple beers.
"And hopefully even move a hutch"

So I plan to lay it on its backside in the morning, so I can brush a layer of urethane on the top panel that faces the ceiling.
As well as the bottom panel faceing the floor.
I've went this far... might as well get those areas as well. It is old wood and all.

I stood on top of 4 car tires to take a picture of the top.
You can see the temporary handles we had used to move it this far.
As well as what small amount of new plywood structure is used in the hutch.

It has an equal amount of plywood in the bottom. But a person can't see it, and it keeps the piece strong and was necessary in making the whole unit square to begin with.

Also added a pic of me standing beside it trying to reach the top, to give it some perspective of size.

By this time tomorrow I should be able to post a picture of it inside our house, next two our wood stove where I'm thinking it is going to look amazing

I should almost take a few photos with a real camera at that point

    Cheers
