Christofle shellfish-forks and spoons

Discussion in 'Silver' started by Johan Derkesen, Jan 5, 2017.

  1. I have this set of shellfish forks and spoons made by Christofle between 1930 and 1935. As you can see in the images they are in great condition. Could anyone tell me what they are worth since a colleague of mine would like to buy them. Thank you.

It depends where you are, in all honesty. Your best bet is to search Ebay Holland and UK completeds and do a general search on Christofle shellfish. They're plated but very nice. The downside is that it's less useful cutlery. My guess would be about two to three hundred euro.

I think this is a dessert set, rather than for shellfish.
The forks would have been used for cake or pastry and the spoons for puddings or jellies. This may make a difference when searching previous sales.

That's a thought. And in fact, fork and spoon would have been used together for proper etiquette.

    Right about the etiquette.
I couldn't find any examples of 2 tine pastry/dessert forks, but the shape of the left tine is typical of the blade shape of dessert forks I have seen. The 2 tine shellfish forks are equal in shape and proportionally longer for digging out those morsels.
I don't know how a spoon would come in to play in the service of shellfish unless it would be to serve a soup.
