It's going to get used, so I wanted to protect what paint was left.

I scrubbed it good prior, removing loose paint chips.

And That's where I am at with it.

I'll post more pics once it's all clear coated/ sealed.

And a final in the house photo once it's there!

Thanks again for the feedback and takeing the time to look at my train station hutch.

Also.. my friend had about 20hrs in it.
And he usto work in a cabinet shop.
So it's perfectly square/ he is fussy!!!
    So that's a bonus

That seems short time for all that work... Especially without lots of space.

    For sure! Wasn't to bad.
I guess the fact the wood is "finished" helped.
No sanding, etc... the tall doors made short work of the end panels. And the wide shelf boards helped as well.

I'm not sure what something like that would cost to buy.. but I think I got a pretty good deal:)

IMG_1648.JPG In this pic you can see how he ran a spindle through a table saw to cover the front bottom edge of th door as well as cover the notch in the door from the old hinge.

I was wondering how you would clean such a piece after it was done, you know how women think. The varnish was the finishing touch in my opinion. Very nice indeed!

    Thanks! Glad you agree:)
I also chose an interior / exterior varnish with UV protective additive.
So washing it won't be an issue. And the varnish shouldn't yellow from sunlight.

But it has been slow and tedious. The wood really soaks up the varnish!

Brushed on clear coat last night for 4 hours... stayed up way to late.
I think once your exposed to enough of the fumes from that stuff ya lose track of time or something.!!

Starting to look close to complete.

Untill you open the 4 cupboard doors!

It all needs to be vacuumed out, scrubbed with a wet rag and soapy water, then varnished/sealed.

And I'm slightly on the fence about it, But I have some white oil base stain here.
I think I may stain the inside of the cupboard doors white.
Instead of just clearing over the natural wood.

Thank you for your kind words :)
We couldn't be more happy with how it's turned out so far.
It's also been a lot of fun to build and work on.

On a sentimental side, my grand father drove train for CN from 1931 to 1973.
He would have walked through those doors hundereds of times, makes it more special to my family of course.:)

Hopefully I'm not posting to many pics..
but I enjoy shareing the progress as it develops:)
Last nights efforts got two coats of varnish on the doors, snapped this pic today with the fluorescent lights off.
    Looking much better.

On the exterior, only the cupboard doors and crown moulding need to be cleared at this point.

Today was the first time I washed the glass in the doors..

And the strange part... as I began washing the glass I thought to myself..
"It's been a while since the station doors had their windows washed"

And as I finIshed that thought about 5 kms away, the train began blowing its whistle.. passing through the town where the station usto stand!

    Coincidental... but strange...
    Made me smile

So I ended up putting on a thin layer of white stain on the inside of the cupboard doors. Then a quick sanding, and clear coat.
Got the inside of the cupboards clean and a coat of clear on in there as well.

    I love this.

May I suggest you buy a notebook, write down everything you did to have this made and add the stage by stage photos. Then, keep the notebook with the thing, so that future owners know its history.
