Does anyone have tips on cleaning an antique catlinite pipe. A "friend" of my was doing some work with me at my home and picked up one of my catlinite pipes. No problem, except whatever was on his fingers left black greasy residue on the pipe which I must now try and remove without damaging it. Any help would be great.

I won't be much help as I only have one old catlinite pipe and I've never cleaned it in any way.

I guess my first question is, is there residue that can be gently lifted/removed with a dry q-tip?

If the residue is absorbed into the stone have you tried wrapping it in paper towels or something to see if it will wick itself out?

There are probably those on the board who have worked with catlinite that will be more help.

Try a white, not pink, pencil eraser. Rub gently.

If the others don't work try a cotton ball with some 70% rubbing alcohol on it, underneath or a less conspicuous place. Should remove grease without causing ill, but I've never had to clean that stuff.

Google is your friend. Google the phrase, hit "images" and you will see many.

Catlinite is a soft stone often carved into smoking pipes and associated with Native Americans. Think "peace pipe".

    Thanks Spring and SIS!!

Edit....that looks to be pretty neat stuff....kind of like a clay only harder, and can be carved.....nice!!!
