My gut reaction is India. Age...dunno. The construction methods haven't changed since Colonial times and I'm not expert enough to tell 100 years old from 20.

I'm afraid I don't have too much to offer here. I almost get the sense that this is an older panel that has been made in to a chest with other wood. The front is so elaborate and the rest so very plain. The quality of the carving is not consistent with a true antique so it may have been made all at once. The disparity in details just makes me question this so wanted to throw it out as a possibility.

The wood on the bottom, sides, top, and feet is pine. I can not tell if the front is pine or not but may very well be. Being pine limits the source to some degree. For example, I doubt it would be Indonesian which might have been my first guess. It could be from India but I am also kind of getting a Mexican or South American vibe from this. The iron hardware would be consistent with Mexico or India. The style doesn't scream out to me on this so you may need to do more research to pin it down.

This is one of those pieces that would really be best judged hands on, doubtless.

Thanks! I looked into chests from India after reading this, and I'm not sure it's a good fit. They're ornate on every side, and this one... well, it's just weird. :)

Right! My thoughts precisely!!! It has such a strange mixture! I had the exact same thoughts about the front panel having been scavenged and stuck on - as if it had some sentimental value or something. I believe the carving is also pine; it feels pretty soft.

The more I look at the chests from India, the more I agree that it's probably not from there. They are elaborate everywhere with much finer, smaller details.

Such an enigma. Thanks so much for your input! I appreciate it tons and tons! :)

I think you're right. Maybe that's simply the best course of action. :)
