Silver Mystery - How old is this pillbox?

A local antiques shop was having a sort of Christmas sale, and stuff was going cheap. I picked up this little thing and I'm trying to date it.

The tag that came with it said it was 1917, Egyptian silver pillbox. WWI souvenir.

The box is silver and it is Egyptian. That much I figured out on my own. The hallmark is in Egyptian characters for the purity '800' (as in 80% silver).

But who is this chap on the coin? I have no idea, and I figured that this was how the seller dated the item. I assume he's an Egyptian king, but I can't figure out which one.

Does anybody recognise him? I suspect he is King Fuad I of Egypt, I have looked up SEVERAL silver Egyptian coins, and while a lot have pictures on them of guys wearing fezes, I have yet to find the coin which EXACTLY matches this one.

    Any help is appreciated!!

    ---

I don't know how much this helps, but this is the hallmark. The same mark is punched into the inside of the lid, and the inside of the box.

The arrow with two dots next to it is Egyptian for '800', that's all I've found out.

Thats King Farouk of Egypt, 1936- 1952

The coin if silver will be a Piastres, but unless I can see the size I can`t tell the denomination.

2.5cm across, Davy. As I suspected, the seller wasn't entirely accurate with his description - hence my own researching.

    I then suspect it is a 5 Piastres 0.8330 silver dated between 1937 -1939 83% silver.

    Thanks Dave!

And the guys at the shop told me that this seller was a 'coin expert'.

Still, it is a piece of Egyptian silver. Not everyone can say they have that in their collections! :)

The mark on the left is the assay office mark. Like you said 800 with what may be the Cairo or Alexandria assay office mark. I can't see it well enough to be sure of the city. The mark to the right is possibly the guarantee mark. Before 1946 it would be a cat. After 1946 a lotus flower was used. Not sure about your mark.

Then again I think the mark on the right is a date letter. "Date letters until 1946 were written using Roman numerals. After 1946, arabic letters were used."

Here is an Egyptian pill boxes that probably has the markings as yours but missing the guarantee mark.

Is it possible to show the reverse of the coin which will have the date and denomination on in Islamic text which I can translate.
They made a 2 Piastres the same size which was mainly nickel, when clean they are hard to tell apart.
The reverse will tell me for sure.

Hi Davy, I don't know if it's possible to remove the coin. It may be soldered in place. It's got a sort of collar and border around it, and then the coin itself is seated inside of that.

Magnet test, if it is copper-nickel some are magnetic depending on the amount of nickel alloy.
    Or silver acid test.

Just tested it. Absolutely not magnetic.
