Unusual Desk?? Need Help Identifying

    I'm posting this for a friend. He picked up this piece of furniture with no maker's marks on it and was wondering about the age and a possible manufactacturer. It's about 7' long by 28" tall. The cutout made him think desk. Any help would be great. 20161212_205525-1215x594.png

    Odd thing. Wonder if it is some kind of retail display piece. The recess really doesn't seem wide enough to be functional as a desk.

    It does look like it would have been a rather uncomfortable "desk". Maybe the cutout was meant to go around a pole. I've messaged him about the width of the cutout but no reply yet. Judging from the picture, if the overall size of the desk is around 7' than the cutout couldn't have been more than about 12 inches.
