I'm interested in this, too. So many times when I see a genuine antique Asian piece, I'm surprised that it isn't much more recent.

 

Good score today .... Lalique Pinsons bowl at the thrift store for $2.00! Perfect condition just tucked away on a bottom shelf along with some mixing bowls ..... This one is not mine but just like it. It is a newer release of a 1938 design.

 

Can you call them finds if you have not yet sealed the deal to buy the items? They did take a bit of finding.

Two of us working for 7 hours of solid 'picking' came up withg some interesting stuff. My colleague concentrated in the pocket watches and clocks, I rummaged for everything else and we were both pretty exhausted by the time we finished.

Here are a few items on a toleware tray. They include a shotgun shell crimper, the only candle snuffer I have ever seen in perfect condition, normally the spring is broken, an unusual carved object of which a couple of extra pictures follow, an early 20th C. Hohner harmonica,




A fine meerschaum figural pipe


The biggest ship's light I have ever seen, it's almost 2 foot high

An antique theodolite in fitted solid copper case, case doubles as a mount and stand when the lid is inverted.

A fox's mask

A weird huge 'seed' thing carved out(?) on one side, which rattles.
It's almost a foot long.

A pink glass vase, looks more brown in the picture

Some confederate bills, two 1862 100s and 1866 South Carolina fractional.

A mid Victorian dressing table mirror.

What I think is a carved coconut.

A 2 level cupboard which is rather handsome but rather huge.


And an antique lock.



Also a fair amount of other stuff, big and small. Unhappily there was no miser's biscuit tin filled with banknotes or a big bag of gold sovereigns, and all the pictures appeared to be Victorian framed prints of no significant value.

I love that bowl. I first saw one in a Philadelphia storefront. Had to go in and look at it closely and to really pick it up. Saw a second one damaged at a flea almost bought it with the big hunk missing but the lady wanted 200. Now third is a charm I see yours. 2 bucks I am floored.

I saw part of the cupboard in your first set of photos. I love it as well as the lock.
"Vici" dresser table is nice also. Gad i would still be there, I love rooting around like a big old hog.

Af, wow, what a great collection. The double gourd-type thing looks intriguing.. makes me think South or Central American? I love the carved coconut and the cupboard.

That tole tray looks interesting

 

Another WOW here, af, for your finds. That Robert Burns jug by the John & Matthew Preston Bell Co. is pictured in the online book of The Glasgow Pottery of John & Mathew Preston Bell. by Kelly, 2006, Chapter XI "Wares of the 1860s," P. 55 of the book, P. 7 of the online pdf file of that chapter. As you no doubt already know, this pattern was "presumably first produced in 1859 in commemmoration of the Robert Burns' centenary." The pattern was probably made up into the 1880s and later; however, after 1880, the company added Ltd to there mark. This means your jug was made earlier than 1880. The book says the pattern of the jug pictured is "Burns I." It goes on to say because this was a popular pattern the pottery later made this pattern in 2 other names. The pattern name on yours is just "Burns" without the "I." Whether this makes much of a difference, I doubt it. The important thing is that yours is not signed with the "Ltd" keeping it before 1880.

Great stuff AF! Your large seed pod is also a carved coconut. It just has the husk on it and has been cut back to the coconut for carving.

 

Brad: Nice find!

AF: Cool unusual stuff. What did the mixed metal item turn out to be? Vase, mirror or something else?

 

Long learning curve on Asian stuff for me anyway. Here is what I have observed and read -so far... Brand new imari doesn't have the depth of hand painting. Usually a new stuff has a decaled design or very tight stencil look, maybe along with some hand work. Also the color of glazes give good clues. Especially the orange/red and the cobalt blue. Old Jap Imari, the underglaze blue, is a bit sloppy and "inky". Chinese imari is a slightly different blue, maybe more purplish and usually a little neater in application. Another consideration is how and where the gold over glaze is applied. Also to be considered are the design elements, clay, foot, color combo used, etc. BUT don't take my word for it...just my observations.

 

Wow on the latest finds !!! Whats the backstory on that house AF ? Elderly person who had no heirs ? Hoarder ? Or was it just a storage situation ? Im always fascinated by places and people who have so much in a house.
