Sellers often err on the side of the more expensive material. I specialize in cameos, which are also made in both glass & agate. I often see the 2 confused in sales listings.

The sharply conchoidal chip on the neck is another clue.

They help confirm it is glass. The 'frosted' look of the white areas in not something you would see in stone, different from the cloudiness stone can have.

Thank you.I just wanted to clarify.I am not a collector of snuff bottles and the only reason I did buy was the fact that it was amongst a bulk lot along with some other interesting pieces and the price was right.Which leads me to my next question,If I should post the pics here or start a new thread.

If you were you would be the expert & we would be asking you for help. We've just been telling you why we concluded, with only photos to go by, that the bottle is glass. You never know, might be useful info some other time you are trying to make the same distinction.

Sorry, pics of what? If it's a different item, a new thread is better.

These are indeed glass.. They were intentionally made to imitate various types of stone.. In this case it was made to imitate shadow agate.. It was a very common practice in China..

This does not make them undesirable or less collectable.. Some of these kind of glass imitating stone bottles can be more desirable than the real stone bottles.

It was considered a tribute to the skill of a glass blower or glassmith the closer they could imitate to various stones like agates, jade, aventurine, realgar and others.
