I have this old tapestry and I think it's after a famous painter but who, Boucher or?
Sorry about lousy picture but where it is now is difficult to take a new one. It's pretty large, 2.5' x 4' wide approx.

Costumes not the right era for Boucher and I don't recognize it as being inspired by the work of a famous artist. Spanish genre scene. Not an uncommon tapestry subject.

Thank you, @Debora! I have been unable to locate the same scene, i.e. mine, in Images on the Net, have tried on and off thru the years. The only time I caught a glimps of this exact scene was in a movie with Rodney Dangerfield, "Back To School". In the beginning of the movie Dangerfield's character is at a party given by by his wife. The party premises show this picture briefly on a wall in the background. I can't tell if it is a tapestry, a painting or a mural. It appeared to be much larger than my version, however. I'd just like to find its origin if at all possible.

It's origin may be no further than the maker.

I guess I wrote that wrong. I know the origin of the maker, it's Belgium. I bought this tapestry unframed and had it framed. On the back of the weave it was stamped in capital letters MADE IN BELGIUM.

The origin of the motif, the Spanish scene, may be a Spanish painting.

In the 18th century it was a popular pastime among Spanish nobility to "go slumming" in gypsy camps. The nobles would go there in groups of friends, men and women, and enjoy themselves dancing and drinking with the vagabonds. This scene shows very clearly a wig-clad noble enjoying a dance with a gypsy woman dancer. On the right a young lady, obviously the companion to the nobleman, languishes alone with an unhappy expression on her face; she is not amused.

Well, I'll keep searching, thanks for responding, Debora!

You didn't write that wrong. I knew the piece was manufactured in Belgium. My point was... I suspect it was designed there too. I do not believe it was taken from a painting.

I wonder how the very same scene came to be on the background in the movie "Back To School'! I managed a full photo of the tapestry:

For risk of sounding trite: Rodney's movie wall scene was so much bigger than mine! It took up most of a whole wall. Mine is only 43" H x 60" W!

at the risk of sounding repetitive , certain scenes were more popular than others, and why wouldn't they have made them in different sizes.. like they make rugs..

True. Like the many copies of Mona Lisa.

But there was one original of her.

And I do believe there was one original of this scene too :)

Exactly! Which is why I'm here asking for help from all you experts :):joyful:. Having owned this antique since purchase at Marché aux Puces in Paris in 1963, folded in suitcases, cartons through 2 European countries and 9 moves in 4 U.S. states until 1982 when mounted on board, seen with me in 1991 below, until finally framed as seen above in Florida in 2004, it's high time for me to find out if there once was a [famous?] painting leading up to its motif!

If it isn't handwork and was done by machine, which it appears to be, it will have been a multiple.

    Hi,
Do you remember before it was framed if it was almost the same on the front as the back or did the back have stripes of color?

It seems if there was a famous painting as the source, it would not be so difficult to find. It also seems reasonable to believe that the companies making these popular jacquard woven tapestries would have their own designers.

I have the same tapestry along with five or six others that my uncles brought back from Europe after WWII. They are common.
