I've had this for almost 40 years, found it at an old house we owned. Pretty sure it's made of lead, it's extremely heavy. Anyone have an idea on age or origin? Some signatures of tourists it looks like early as 1904. Jones Falls is signed a few times.
I assume Jones Falls Ontario near Elgin. 001.JPG 002.JPG

The draperies make me think funerary, but it could be a garden ornament.

I can't see how that can be made of lead. Looks more like a slightly worn stone - like sandstone.

Looks like some corner chips near the bottom too. Lead would not do that.

Is it all one piece or are there places where it comes apart?

I thought it was stone or concrete too. Fremont Mills was 26 years old in 1904 and IMHO a bit too old to be defacing objects with his signature.

It's for sure made of metal, I'll post a pic of the bottom tomorrow.

I was only showing the writing for the date and location. Wondering if someone knew the original location.

Try biting it, if you can leave your teeth marks in it then it is lead.

Lead is resistant to sulphuric acid, try dripping some on it.

A scrap metal merchant will tell you straight away.

Let's assume that Fremont Mills didn't get too far afield in 1904 since he wouldn't have had a car. You might want to start with the local historical society. They should be knowledgable about the types of places a marker of this nature might have been placed. Does look like a funerary "stone" but they typically don't get Kilroy-was-here signatures or get pinched.

Debora, sorry for my ignorance, who was Fremont Mills? I found it signed again with two companions. Filed it a bit to show metal. 005.JPG 008.JPG

    Filed? Where?

I do see some "pipes"? Like maybe it had them as supports in the building process?

Fremont Mills was no one as far as I know. But he lived in Ontario and had access (too much!) to your object.

So where would three local-ish guys roaming around on a summer day go for a little adventure? What sight do you think they might have been a-seeing?

Jones Falls locks, on the rideau canal. Could have been taking boat to Ottawa.
