Antique ring? No marks.

    I got this ring for $5 yesterday from a friend of mine who does clean outs. He wasn't interested, as it isn't marked.

    It looks like it might be gold washed silver with an amethyst and tiny cut diamonds - but what do I know.

    Can you tell me how old it is and if any of it is real?

    The ring appears to have been sized at some point.The photo of the "diamonds" is too blurry,but they appear to be pre-1900 cut and the large stone could be any number of stones.

    The top left stone I can see a facet like a diamond shape,but everything else is out of focus even with it enlarged.

    I can't see much either. Do you have a stamp/rug magnifier handy? They have built in stands and it's dead easy to take closeups through them. Those little stones are rose cuts, but I have a feeling they're quartz or similar rather than diamonds. I don't think the ring is incredibly old.

    I can't help with the design, but I have a gem tester and an acid test kit. If you would like I can test the stones and metal for you. I have done this in the past for eBay boardies and I am happy to do it for you. You send it to me, I will test it and send it back the same day. No charge, I am paying it forward since without the internet I would know no where near what I do know about jewelry.
