Are Those Bakelite Beads

    Looking at that link they soaked the amber in oil for a few days and used the toothpaste to buff it up afterwards.

    I have a mystery item that has amber beads, the beads are cloudy. Someone told me an oil bath would work but the beads are strung on cord that is knotted (I'm probably not describing it well, I will attach a photo) and I didn't want to cut the beads off. So I used a Q-tip to put a small amount of mineral oil on one bead, what a difference!

    Here is the item, I don't know what it is, so far the most likely suggestion was it is used as part of a traditional Chinese wedding headdress:
