I don't see how that could possibly make a difference in an identification, but YEAH! I wanna know too.........................

There is most likely a difference, but aren't the "names" bison/buffalo commonly used interchangeably here in the States?

Yes - bison or buffalo, but not "cow."

Oh! pardon me! :sorry: Looks like Kard edited the title a while back, but I could swear it did not say Buffalo when I first saw this thread.

To be precise, the animal commonly called "buffalo" in the US is technically the "American bison." "Buffalo" has become an accepted usage however.

As with many other bovines, a male bison is called a bull, and a female bison is called a cow. So there are buffalo cows, or cow bison, whatever you want to call them.....and buffalo calves too of course.

(Origin of the term: "In the seventeenth century, French explorers in North America referred to the new species they encountered as "les boeufs", meaning oxen or beeves. The English, arriving later, changed the pronunciation to "la buff". The name grew distorted as "buffle", "buffler", "buffillo", and, eventually, "buffalo"." (from The American Buffalo in Transition, by J. Albert Rorabacher.))

So unless I am mistaken, this is a bull bison, or a buffalo bull.

    Thanks for all the replies.
From what I can tell it's made of spelter ( zing and lead maybe?), plated with copper and finished in bronze wash.
Do you think it's American or foreign? 20th century?

Maybe it's a beefalo / cattalo . The face doesn't look heavy or hairy enough to be a buffalo/bison.
