    Hi there, I found this antique cup a few years back and I was wondering if anyone could give me more information on it! There is a hallmark on it but I haven't been able to interpret it properly. Also, what is the value on it? Excited to hear back, and thanks in advance!

    Crown = Sheffield Assay Office
    Lion passant = Sterling Silver
    Woman's head (far right) = made during the reign of Queen Victoria

    So that makes the Z a date of 1865 (which actually runs from mid-1865 to mid-1866 (but who's counting.)

    The maker's mark is the tiny thing on the left, but it's hard to see. What do you make of the letters?

    I was watching an episode of Antiques Roadshow where they said it's best to polish silver ONCE, PROPERLY - and never touch it for as long after that as is possible. Heavy layers of tarnish apparently, can permanently damage the silver.

    Interesting cup...... handle appears to be cast,but the cup looked like repossee in the top photo. With the added photos the cup seems to have been made on a rolling mill.

    I've heard that too; that most silver collectors are not looking for heavy original "patina" or tarnish as would be the case for most other areas of collecting. I don't collect silver, so the idea of polishing an old object seems very strange to me.

    not until you've walked into the Mappin & Webb store in downtown London, where even the best sunglasses can not defeat the glare .....

    Asprey is MUCH more fun............they make some of the most unusual, useless and tacky silver I have ever had the privilege to laugh at....................
