Featured Hoarder or storer?

I do not believe that I was preaching or condemning anyone. I am sorry if you took offense, none was intended. I would like to add that it is also perfectly fine for people not to worry about things. (cause there's a million things to be you know that there are). However, if nobody ever worried or cared about anything -who'd want to live in a world like that?

 

Found in my latest turnout, a memento mori self portrait of William Bass (1785-1864) as a corpse, with flights of angels, etc. Some damage, unframed.





and a rather more 'domestic' picture, a 19th C oil on canvas, 'Cottage near Deven' (sic). I suspect this to be by George Willis Pryce and that Deven is a village. I got it from a title on the back. No one would say 'near Devon' if that was what they meant.

 

It appears that William was sure he was deserving of a crown after his death.

 

And, though not depicted in the painting, stars in his crown I'm sure.

 

Af -- I realize that this has nothing to do with anything, but I LOVE the window in that room!

 

Caption on a cartoon of a patron giving instruction to an artist: "Give me more angels... and make them happier to see me."

 

There is an artistic/symbolic element in the Bass portrait which I find quite touching: the already-turned-brown autumn leaves whirling near the hourglass.

 

I thought that was damage to the canvas but I like the idea

The Bible is turned inside out, with the title on the centerfold, that's ominous. I love the swirling blue blanket, like some CGI graphic of a portal to the netherworld in one of those haunted ghost movies, The Counterpane. This is the scene where Gabriel, in the center with a look of disgust ("oh no, don't let him in"), has just snatched the crown and passed it behind him to Phanuel, and is about to give Willy a shove into the abyss, while baby angel Michael says, "you shouldn't touch him...", just before Gabriel does and is sucked down with the villain.

 

I've been considering this hoarder/storer thing. I know I've got the storer thing going on but it is things I am at least attempting to sell. I'm not so sure about the hoarder thing. I think there is a fine line when it comes to collecting vs hoarding. I have pretty much every surface and every cupboard and corner filled. What's that then?

Sis, you are not a hoarder - there is all that floor space, as was mentioned earlier.

Nope, that's not even storing, that's collecting with a touch of entirely pardonable overflow. The doctor says, no problem there.

I have just more or less sorted out that latest room, the one with the 2 leaded light windows (real leaded, not sticky tape ) and vacumed the floor. Although it did take me at least five minutes to find out how to turn the cleaner on and make it bend at the base. It seems you do it with your feet! Who knew?

Bit of a let down, but the rest of the stuff is know known and can be classified as 'not mine' and 'someone else's problem' since it is mostly my partner's clothes that can go to the charity shop or the para-daughter's stuff from school which she left when she moved out many years ago and that can go to her house for sorting out or just be piled up in her bedroom here as a treat for the next time she visits == 'I'm locking you in till all this stuff is sorted' sort of thing.


Rejoice, it can be done. Of course, the shock may be fatal for my partner when she gets back, but that will simplify getting rid of the womens clothes. :-(.

 

I really like your china hutch with it's display of blue and white, pewter and old pottery, though I'd rather see it antiqued or have the color knocked back. I hate when old, chipped, or faded objects are placed against a stark white, it's a bit clinical like a museum and tends to highlight the stains and flaws rather then the patina and richness of the objects.


I am also a little turned off when I see book cases completely filled with rows and rows of similar objects; like an antique shop, I expect to see price tags and a half price section on the bottom shelf.

Again, the stark white just adds to the shop display feel. I don't mind the white trim here, but the inside should be painted, or at least paper the back behind the shelves in a non busy patterned wall paper. The tops and fronts of the shelves can be painted the same color. For the bookcase that has all my oldest and small collection of collectible books, I painted the insides flat black (thank you John Vere Brown). The books, rock specimens and objects d'art look spectacular, like an antique library.

A case like yours in a living room, would do well to have the bottom two shelves with doors. You could then add some books and risers to the shelves (books make excellent risers) to warm it up and to break up the repetition of shapes and surfaces. It would make the case look more decorated, homey and in keeping with the rest of the home. Remove half the objects and pack them up in boxes in the lower shelves behind the doors. Then make little displays between or with the books of certain collections, like you sort have done. You can change the displays (switching out the stuff stored below) when ever you want, to show off part of the collection. Like around the holidays, when you are having a dinner party, when you finally locate the elusive what-not that competes a collection, when you have overnight guests, when you do spring cleaning. Then you and your visitors not only see something different from time to time, but it is easier to appreciate the individual objects. In fact these displays can be more or less didactic and you can further expand the textures by introducing period photos, catalogs or postcards of similar objects, wood carvings, metal ware of the period, napkins or textile pieces, etc.

The vignette photos of the other rooms are utterly charming and I love the displays. You have an impressive collection, no doubt. I admit that this style of decorating is somewhat out of fashion right now, but I consider it classic, even if like chintz it goes in and out of style. A different paint color on the wall is the only update one needs from time to time. Of course, I am against stark white for the same reasons. But I love the chairs if not the pineapple teal and pink fabric. (hate teal and pink, or teal and mauve combos, more so when they were in style) They would be outstanding in a blue & white needlepoint (ala Kaffe Fassett, but w/ original wood of course).

Worth waiting for, a hoard for sure..............no floor!

But who knows what treasures lie in wait. You must have forgotten most of what went in there.
