We wanted to photograph them when she passed away. There were too many pieces. We went room to room photographing them and numbering them before we boxed them up. Now we have to divide them between siblings. So, they are numbered and boxed where applicable.

That's not Gothic. Hard to tell from photograph but appears to be Renaissance Revival.

Gothic2.jpg Lots of cool carvings of people and faces. Love it!

    kyratango Bug jewellery addiction!

In France we have many sets for dining rooms made in 1880s, style called Henri II. This could have been an « argentier » to hold and presenting flatware.

Henri II style possibly from Belgium. Recently sold a buffet deux corp that was very similar and came from Belgium. Fun piece!

What does the inside look like? Was there a shelf or was it just open inside?

I ask, because I notice your mother seemed to like religious items.
Any chance this is a personal altar?

I googled renaissance revival altar and only got large pieces.

Think Kyra and Laura have this pegged. Not entirely sure of use.

They do! Walnut, NW European ca. 1880. You've got a real antique this time! :) Not Gothic as Debora noted. Renaissance Revival - or Henri II style - and no doubt part of a dining room set. I'm not familiar with "argentier" as a furniture piece that holds flatware - thanks Kyra! - but it seems entirely logical for this. Beautiful piece!!!
