Export Porcelain Rare Form Dish?

Discussion in 'Pottery, Glass, and Porcelain' started by BryanTrackstand, Oct 25, 2016.

  1. Hi, I'm looking for more info on a piece of porcelain I recently inherited and I cannot seem to find too much info on this shape. Hard to tell the authenticity of some China, I hear there are a lot of repos but for Canton ware? This is not marked anywhere and looks a lot like other Canton plates I have. Would this be considered collectable? $_12.JPG

Hello, Bryan. Even though the underside is not marked, the way the underside is made can be very useful in analyzing a ceramic item. Any chance of a picture?

And while I'm at it, do you have closer pictures of the details of the decoration as well?

Measurements? It could be the size of a butter pat for all we know. :joyful: We can't tell from the pictures.

It's the Nanking Pattern, that's all I can tell for sure.

This is a nice web site with a shapes gallery that might be helpful:

    I don't see a problem being 19th Canton ware.

From the link Laura posted, the dish if big enough looks like the square shape serving dishes with fluted top rim on the following page:

FWIW, I also think the Nanking Pattern because of the spearhead border.

This Nanking platter has the same border, margin and possibly the same design in the middle as your dish:.

I believe Canton has a rain and cloud border.

"Both Canton and Nanking ware are hand painted with a composition of a coastal village scene consisting of tea house, arched bridges, willow trees, meandering streams and distant mountains and an absence of figures. The most obvious difference between Canton and Nanking patterns is noted in the design of the borders of each. The border of Canton patterns has a blue lattice network and inner border of wavy or scalloped lines called “clouds” while Nanking borders are diapered with a geometric lattice and spearhead design and may have an application of burnished gold. Unlike the aesthetically finer quality and reliable color of Nanking ware, Canton pigments vary in intensity from a washed out gray-blue to cobalt blue, depending on the varied intensities of heat within the kiln during the firing process."

  10. Hi and thanks for all of your replies. The size is 8 1/4 all around. It's very well glazed and the cobalt is vibrant.

The covered dish has the Canton border. According to most descriptions of the differences between Canton and Nanking ware, Nanking ware has a more vibrant color while Canton ware tends to be duller, washed out, blue.
