I need some help trying to find out what this piece of furniture is and/or was. It's my next restoration project and I'd like to know what I'm working with. I'm not sure how much of it is original. The wood desk is built around a metal frame and the wire shelf has me even more puzzled. The dimensions are 38"w x 30"h x 20"d. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome! This is strangest thing. Home project? I can't imagine a commercial outfit making a desk with so little structure on the underside.

    Is the case plywood?

I think thats a 60s wire desk frame someone repurposed.Badly. The wire shelf was to hold papers,or magazines,or phone books.

I'm thinking you are correct. I found one similar (link below) that has a glass top. The one that I have does have a lip around the top frame, that would support a glass or other inset top.

I, personally, would get rid of all that added wood and use the frame as intended.

If you want to keep it as built I can imagine it looking better painted and with sleek modern type pulls.

This is another project my wife brought home from a garage sale. If I can sell her on my plans, I'll be removing all of the existing wood and putting a nice finished wood top and shelf bottom in the original frame.

The wood section looks like an old sewing machine cabinet.
