I think Bear got the find of the day. I went to a church "clothing and accessories" sale and found two purses for the local consignment shop. Nothing worth showing.

I'd never even heard of Alexis Bittar - I don't think it's sold here much. But I'd buy anything cheap if it's pretty, or weird or signed. ;) Those are staying in my Smaug Hoard.

I don't know if they export or not; they may have hitched a ride with an exchange student or other magpie. Today was a hunting day, and for once it was also a catching day. I'll have to get some photographs, but a church sale coughed up a nice collection of scrap metal. Modern and mass produced met old and nobody wants it....until I came along. A second fundraiser sale at the local 4H was a relative bust for me, but a colleague snagged two 1930s ceramic flower pots, big ones. She almost left her purse behind ..oops. A third sale was a total waste of gasoline.

Lousy time/weather for photography. This is a bitty piece of pietra dura in a gold-filled setting. I never thought I'd find a piece I could afford, but it's under an inch long and had a little damage. Cost - about $2. The stuff below is a lousy photograph, but the scrap metal dealer won't mind. Modern and mass-produced = MeltMe. (woot!) DSCF3044.JPG

DSC06966-cropped.jpg Got a little bit of everything at an estate auction today. Some art pottery, some postcards, and a few political pinbacks.

Here is one of the pinbacks ..... apparently this gentleman was the Mayor of Chicago around the turn of the century.

Looks like you got some great advertising pieces Charliebfc!
Great score bear, love the colour!
I went to my first estate sale today, I'm in California so I wasn't sure what to expect. Great sale, I'm going back tomorrow. Here are some of my goodies - 3 Garnet pieces, 2 sterling art nouveau pins, the other little brooch is quite nice, has beveled glass on top, and the little cigarette box that I think is Russian burl. When VintageKaren showed her collection of Garnet jewels I had never come across any, and then today I found 3 pieces!
There is also a Halloween sale at the antique mall tomorrow so I'm excited!

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

I sometimes get an idea about getting a client an instant collection. There was a family room in a Prairie style house a while back... needed a collection of stuff like that, Joe. I wanted to get 10 or so pieces together as a starter and then get them collecting. Didn't work out. Some people want to pick their own hobbies, it seems.

Well everybody has their own tastes and interests. Though it would be kind of cool if an interior designer had a warehouse of items that would go well with certain spaces. Personally I think that Ohio art pottery goes well with any décor.

Do you see a lot of nice pottery up north Gila?

I understand its not wood but hope its not modern day resins,

What ever its date History it would make a nice drecitive piece,

Great stuff, all. Garnets are my dad's birthstone, loving those, CXgirl!

I have been under the weather, sleeping late when not working. I am in PT again, long story, a masseuse yanked my arm and whacked it all out. And my legs have a mystery ailment two local doctors can't figure out, going to Philadelphia first week of November. But I did find a few little goodies, gotta take some pics soon.

Funny story, I attended an outdoor show last weekend, and the lady had a little bit of jewelry on display. She had a box not on display she showed me, and I saw a diamond band I liked and asked her how much and she said "I don't know." Why would you even bring items if you don't know how much you want for them and risk losing them? The items she had were probably priced by a jeweler, they were high.....I left my number with her, no call back. I don't get people.....

Marko, hope you're soon feeling better. We'll be thinking of you. ;)

You're right, that lady's "I don't know" is a bit lackadaisical (to say the least).

Thanks.....I am like a vampire in reverse, feel not so good when the sun starts to set. :)

I passed, some of the stones were chipped..... they were sparkly, though. There will be more treasure on the horizon soon enough. Happy hunting, all!

Have had a couple good weeks of picking. I will divide this into two posts. Some of the pics are not the best since taken on the fly...... ;) First post is all thrift store stuff from the last couple weeks.

    This MCM nightstand was $6.00.
    stuff1244.jpg

Smallish 4 drawer chest was $19.00. Missing a knob and that chunk out of the corner but, otherwise, good. Should be a quick fix.

    stuff1245.jpg

27 pieces of Buffalo china restaurantware. Pattern is Kingston. Bought for $10.00.

    stuff1246.jpg

This is carved limestone and about 2x the size of my hand. Probably student work and not the most accomplished. However, it is carved in complete 3-D so can sit any way you place it and display well. Not a bad find for $3.00.

    stuff1247.jpg

Modern style Frankoma planter. Didn't get it cleaned up but it is perfect. Bought for 50 cents.

    stuff1248.jpg

Forgot to photograph these caduceus bookends but found an identical pair on the web and swiped the pic. Mine are not in quite this good condition but a good buy at $3.00.

Went over to the Covered Bridge Festival in Parke Co. IN on Saturday. This used to be a great buying event that I would never miss but it has gone way downhill over the years. It has a small fraction of the vendors it used to have and very little antiques any more. Consequently, I haven't been in several years.

We went on the next to last day of a 10 day event so I wasn't expecting much. It was much as I expected but I was able to glean a few items. I am surprised that a few of these things were still there and at bargain prices. I may just have to go back next year and hit it early.

This art deco barber/beautician's station was 1/2 off the marked price of $25.00. The red formica top is stained but I should be able to do something with it. You rarely see these with red details. Usually found in black.

    stuff1238.jpg
    stuff1238a.jpg
This little 5" pitcher has a beautiful flowing glaze. Not sure who did it so will post in PGP. Bought for $3.00.
    stuff1239.jpg

These chrome and glass lamps were $12.00 for the pair. Probably late 60s or early 70s.

    stuff1240.jpg

This is probably my best find. These are University of Illinois andirons. They are well documented as coming from the university foundry and produced in very limited numbers in the 20s. Bought for $45.00 and now in my shop space at more than 10x that.
    stuff1237.jpg

This industrial metal work table was $15.00.
    stuff1241.jpg

These 5 wood casting patterns were $20.00 for all. All but one are marked State Dept. of Engineering on them.

    stuff1242.jpg

This heavy art deco table has seen better days but was a good buy at $18.00. The top is not original and had patterned foil self-stick vinyl on it before I took it off. I am going to try and use this top if I can get it looking presentable. The tubes were originally chrome but I think beyond rejuvenating at this point. I will probably do a two-tone black and silver paint job on the base and go with a plain black top. Not sure I needed another big project but this one has good "bones".

    stuff1243.jpg

Another really good find is this pair of Ben Seibel design Orb bookends. Bought for $2.00. Obviously, anyone who knows anything wasn't looking
